Punk rock vs Sharia Law in Indonesia

in #music7 years ago (edited)

I have always fascinated about the punk and metal scene in Indonesia. I have always wondered why are Indonesian youth obsessed so much with Punk and Metal. I mean every country has it's own Punk and Metal scene, even if it's small, from India to Bangladesh or even Botswana(Africa) for that matter, but in most of these countries it's like a cult following. But Indonesia seems to take it to extreme. It's a place where even local metal bands sells Stadium. Fans are dedicated. One guy from a band told in the "Global Metal Documentary " that he had to sell his father's shoes to attend a Metallica concert. So even poverty doesn't matter, not to mention the Religious restrictions they face for listening and playing the kind of music they like. Although Indonesia is quite liberal as a muslim country, there are certain province like Aceh which practice Islamic laws( I think it's the only one). And musicians, metalheads and skinheads there have to face a lot of problem than the rest of the country. It's hard to even organize gigs there. Some of the religious people even blame Punk rock for the Sunami that hit Indonesia. That's how sad it is. Check out this video by Noisey.

You can see the brotherhood among the Punks in this video. They seem happy even if they are poor. I wish I was a crypto millionaire so that I could donate them some coins and help them buy instruments and organising gigs.
