Odd Meter Improvisation - Jamming in 15/8.

in #music5 years ago

Hello Steemit!

So , today I wanted to share a quick tip to be able to phrase and play over odd meter rythms , don't let the numbers scare you! Whenever you have an odd meter number like 5 , 7 , 9 , 11 , etc. The best way to handle it is to identify where the subdivisions are and learn to feel your way through them. Any combination is possible but usually the drum and/or bass beat will let you know where they happen naturally.

In this particular track the subdivision goes as follows:

4 + 4 + 4 + 3 = 11

Basically you could think of this as 3 bars of 4/4 and 1 of 3/4 so you just have to watch out for the last subdivision that has one less beat , it becomes more obvious to the ear as the last chord happens at exactly that point.

The progression is very simple though it is important to watch out for the chord changes, as always. Here I am just playing arpeggio and chord based , not much (or any at all) scalar thinking , for me scales don't work in fast chord changing progressions.

I hope you like this little improvisation!

Here is the backing track so you give it a try yourself:

Thanks for listening! Any questions are more than welcome!

You sir, are a bad ass improv guitarist.

I really enjoyed listening. Thank you for sharing Pechi.

Thank you very much brother! I spend a lot of time developing improvisational tools and skills so I'm glad it comes to make sense at some point :D !! Big cheers!! And thanks for listening and the comment :D

Again...
THANK YOU!

jajajajaja ! Gracias querido Kantos !
