Please help Crowdfunding a unique Documentary about Damo Suzuki [Former CAN Leadsinger]

in #music6 years ago (edited)

Dear readers,

as some of you might know, I've a certain connection to one of the most influental German bands of the past: The "Krautrock" legend CAN and their former leadsinger Damo Suzuki in particular.

My connection to Can - Damo Suzuki

In my early youth I was kind of a "big brother" for the two boys of Damo Suzuki, when I visited my aunt in Düsseldorf. My aunt took care of Damo's children as if she were their grandmother, since she lived in the same street and could not have children by herself. So whenever I visited her during holidays, I played intensively with Damo's children.

I also remember having been to Damo's apartment a few times and besides his guitar collection, I was most impressed by his drawings. Besides his singing talent, he is also quite good at drawing.

Here is one of the most famous Can songs, sung by Damo:

Can - Vitamin C (performed live 1972)

History

Suzuki was with Can from 1970 to 1973, recording a number of well-regarded albums such as Tago Mago, Future Days and Ege Bamyasi. Suzuki's first vocal performance with Can was "Don't Turn the Light On, Leave Me Alone" from Soundtracks. His freeform, often improvised lyrics, were sung in no particular language.

Never-Ending Tour

After a ten year break, he returned to making music in 1983 and started a never-ending improvisational world-tour with various local musicians, so-called "Sound Carriers".

Suzuki is renowned for playing shows that are never rehearsed as part of a never-ending tour with Damo Suzuki's Network, a constantly changing line-up of band members who act as ‘sound carriers’. Damo had been touring the world doing the above for 20 years, before it came to a halt when he was diagnosed with cancer in 2014.

Help Crowdfunding "Energy" - a Documentary about Damo

UK filmmaker Michelle Heighway directed "a unique and intimate portrait of his life as he confronts a life-changing illness and attempts to continue his never-ending tour."

"This documentary is a wonderful story of hope and survival. It’s a personal portrait of the life and times of a nomad, poet, unique performer on his very inspiring journey. This has been a really compelling experience that has changed me on so many levels; and I feel this will transfer to the audience", concludes Heighway.

The documentary will not only be interesting for fans of Damo and his music.

This documentary is very universal and will connect hugely to everyone really, from free thinkers , musicians, creatives and people going through battles in life with Cancer or any kind of personal goal or vision.

Built around the narrative of his cancer, the story will reveal a lot about Damo's unique views of life, music and art.

Although Damo’s struggle with his health provides the film’s main narrative arc, ‘Energy’ also examines the past, present and future of this highly influential musician’s work, whilst also capturing his singular outlook on art, protest, lifestyle and alternatives to mainstream thought.

We can also expect a lot of interesting archive footage and even some very unique animations.

With animation of Damo's lucid, hospital bed dreams of starvation, riding on motorbikes for food, old cartoons, hypnotised brainwashed birds, fancy hats, mini skirts and medication, Michelle pieces together a beautiful portrait. This is augmented by vintage archive footage and access to his carefully preserved treasure trove of memories, made up of old photos, drawings, posters and more.

To fund the postproduction of the documentary, Michelle Heighway has started an Indiegogo campaign. Currently there are 44% of the £20,000 goal funded.
