Biography and Mystery of Eddie Vedder [part.5]
Shortly after being accepted as a vocalist, Eddie was in charge of Bad Radio. He is active as an agent, manager, as well as the band's main songwriter. Eddie even made his own flyer design and cassette demo packing. Tim Hall, a famous club owner in San Diego, witnessed how active Eddie is constantly promoting his band.
"He's trying to make it into something," Hall said.
A similar testimony was expressed by Steve Saint. Eddie's friend in the local San Diego music scene. According to him, "90 percent of the garage bands just hanging around, waiting to be found, waiting for the label to knock on the door.Additude Eddie is not like that, he is constantly trying to do something, putting his band in place to be seen."
His attitude that does not want to play in the music he showed by pull from Bad Radio when judged no longer able to give energy and enthusiasm. To Saifudinov, his friend who is the manager at the studio where they are training, Eddie said, "I have to move on and I try to walk and do something."
Shortly, Eddie got info from Jack Irons (the first drummer of Red Hot Chili Papers and his basketball associates) that Stone Gossard, his best friend from Seattle, was looking for drummers and vocalists for their new band. After a few chats with Gossard via phone, Eddie finally flew to Seattle.
When meeting, Eddie likes Gossard and his partner, Jeff Ament. But he wants to hear first the music they play. Finally he returned to San Diego with a demo tape that read 'Stone Gossard Demo' 91 'in his pocket. The incident happened at the end of September 1990.
After several times listening to a demo band that was then called The Gossman Project, Eddie started writing lyrics. He then fills the vocals on 3 songs: Once, Footsteps, and Dollar Short (later renamed Alive). Not wanting perfunctory, Eddie made graphics and printed the cover demo with the words 'Mamasan' before then send it to Gossard.
Impressed on Eddie's vocal stuffing, Gossard and Ament asked him to come to Seattle for rehearsals. Eddie agreed but with a note. He wanted to meet them in the studio right away when he arrived in Seattle. He does not want to play games. Just like the previous conversation with Gossard via phone. He expressed his hope that no time was wasted.
