Wayback Music Challenge - #3 - The Cure - Burn

Dreams of Being a Kung Fu Fighter

So one of my #BeerSaturday buddies (@dennisauburn) nominated me for the Wayback Music Challenge.

The rules are pretty simple, it boils down to writing about some music from your teenage/ early adult years. I can get behind this.

The Crow - Burn

During my teenage years there were two things that dominated my life; Martial Arts, which I practiced as if it were a religion, and martial arts movies. Like anyone who loved a good martial art movie, Bruce Lee was my favourite martial artist.

I've seen every movie he's made, and most of them multiple times. So in 1994, when Bruce Lee's son, Brandon lee, starred in and tragically and died while filming The Crow, I was there and watching the movie as soon as I could. I was immediately addicted to this movie and incredibly saddened that we'd lost another Lee way too early in their lives.

Brandon Lee is amazing in this movie. He may not have had the fighting skills of his father but he was incredible in this movie. And the best song in the amazing soundtrack created for this movie was written and performed by The Cure. Their song, Burn, was written specifically for this movie. And it's been one of my favourite songs ever since I heard it in the movie.

The soundtrack for this movie is the perfect representation of the grunge scene of the mid-90s. Every song was brilliantly chosen. And I listen to the soundtrack virtually every single week. It's also my go to album when I feel like reminiscing about the 90s or being a little bit introspective.

Have a listen, you won't regret it.

The Challenge Rules and Stuff

Thanks to @dennisauburn for nominating me for this challenge. I've been nominated for a few over the past couple of months but have failed miserably at completing them. Let's hope that I can complete this one.

RULES:

  • Choose one song from your high-school/college years.
  • Write a few words about who made you listen to this song for the first time, what this song means to you (was it a breakup song? You blasted it at 100% on your audio system when you were partying with your friends?) whatever you want.
  • Write your text while listening to the song. As soon as the song ends, wrap up what you where writing and submit it.
  • Do this for 7 days in a row if you get nominated
  • Mention one person who should do this on each day.

Tag it with #musicwaybackchallenge and include these rules at the bottom of your post.

@glenalbrethsen - show me your musical past!

My kids loved The Crow - and Brandon Lee. I've never associated The Cure with the movie, they probably did. I really enjoyed just listening to it tho.
My son, Brandon (coincidence :-)) ), and I, years ago, went to LA and saw a taping of MAD TV (I gave high culture to them) and the live musical guest was......The Cure. Just throwing it out there. :-))
Cheers!

Oh wow, seeing them live would be incredible.

MAD TV lol.. I wonder if that is still around.

I'm kind of burnt out on challenges right now, so what I thought I would do is, instead of making an entirely different post, I'd just comment here.

I commented on another one just like this. In that case, it was the movie Footloose and the song Footloose.

In this case, though, I'm going with the first song I heard on the radio when I got back from my church mission. On the mission there were all kinds of rules, a lot of them to keep us safe, and others attempting to keep our minds and hearts on what we're doing. So, that meant no music of any kind while driving around in the car.

So, when I was off my mission, returned home and then decided I wasn't going to get a job in Oregon during that time, I went back down to Southern California where I had served. I didn't really have a car or place of my own for a while, so wasn't really listening to any music, either.

It was sometime in 1989, while driving from one bus stop to the next to clean it, that Simply Irresistible by Robert Palmer came on the radio. For a long time, it was my favorite.

The lyrics are generally important to me, but in this case, I was making somewhat of an exception. It was the music itself that I liked a lot, along with Palmer's vocalizations.

I actually rarely listen to lyrics to be honest. I much prefer how a song makes me feel.

I once listened to a song and absolutely loved it, a few months later I was listening to it again and I realised it was a guy singing about how he wanted to stop watching porn and turn to Jesus... that was a surprise to say the least.

Well, and see, the lyrics are what I listen to primarily, because if I like a song, I tend to sing it. And then I have words coming out of my mouth that I might not want to have coming out of my mouth. :)

That's funny about the song. Not a bad message at all, but still, funny that you would really like the song, then hear the lyrics and go, "What the what?" :)

In the case of Simply Irresistible there's the bass I really like and just the uptempo and the timing of things. Probably wouldn't like it so much now if I didn't like it then.
