From what I've been reading, time could well be one thing (yet to be completely defined), while our perception of time—how it progresses, relativity, etc.—could be a whole different matter.

I think there's really no doubt that our perception of time is linear. We don't jump around in a timeline between our past, present and future living events that took place in a non-chronological order. Yet, it's quite possible that time has properties that might allow for such things if we knew how to access it, or rather, step outside of it.

What we are capable of perceiving and what actually may exist has been a question that has been thought over throughout the ages, and only become more complicated as we get better at measuring what is going on around us. So, time, along with all kinds of unexplained phenomena, could have all kinds of characteristics that we're just not able to realize because of some limitation we have as mortal beings.
