Starbucks and the Melusine... (ENG/ PT/ DE)

The eyes seem loving, dispose. These wavy hairs and the victorious star crown ... The so-called Siren logo, which has been the Starbucks sign since 2011, has a very old meaning.

I love coffee, cafeterias, restaurants, snack bars and bistros. I prefer to support small shops/ business and so I rarely go into big companies like Starbucks.
But within now three years I was three times in it and every time I saw this mermaid similar creature. Personally I find it creepy and scary.
This logo also surprised me, I expected a coffee bean or a cup as logo, but a two-tailed sea creature? How is that possible?
Since the question had occupied me, I pursued this thought.

Origin of the logo

Obviously, Lippincott didn't reinvent the siren from scratch. This logo has been the Starbucks landmark since the very first Starbucks location in 1971.

It is officially said that the images, which were taken from a maritime book, inspired the founders and therefore they chose them as the logo of the coffee shop in Seattle.

What deep meaning the symbol actually has.

The original Starbucks logo was the image of a "two-tailed mermaid", often mistakenly referred to as a siren. The Greek mythology is that sirens led sailors to shipwreck off the coast of a coral island in the Pacific known as Starbuck Island5. Officially it is said that this picture was chosen as a logo to attract and seduce every coffee lover from all over the world like a siren.

But sirens are not sirens...if you look at it closely, Starbucks has a Melusine as its logo. This two-tailed sea creature can also be seen at some church gates. The subtle difference is that ancient sirens were depicted as bird creatures and the melusines as snake-fish creatures.

According to one of many legends, Melusine was the daughter of a Scottish high king and a fairy. Melusine had magical powers and when her father treated her unfairly, Melusine locked him in a magical prison. Her mother was angry for this action, which is why she cursed Melusine. One day a week, Saturday, which was considered Earth Day, Melusine had to turn into a semi-being. Snakes often appear historically and are closely associated with nobility or rulers, such as the legendary Chinese emperor Fu Xi, who according to legend also had a snake body.

The mythology of Melusine in Europe goes back to the 12th century. But also in ancient Greece there are traces of this being. Also in West Africa, sea and river goddesses were worshipped in the form of these double-tailed mermaids.

The two spread held fishtails can be interpreted well as birth-positions. In the Engadine, melusines are therefore associated with wealth and child blessings.

In Christian symbolism the Melusine with the spread fish tails stands for sexual seduction. Her appearance at church portals is intended to be a warning not to be seduced by the "demonic power of sexuality", although it may also reflect the other side of the coin and could prompt it to do so.

Personally, I find a coffee bean even simpler and more appealing! But now I finally know what this creepy creature means at Starbucks...off now... I need a good coffee!

Logotipo da Starbuck

Os olhos parecem amorosos, descartem. Estes cabelos ondulados e a coroa de estrela vitoriosa ... O chamado logotipo da sereia, que é o signo de Starbucks desde 2011, tem um significado muito antigo.

Adoro café, cafeterias, restaurantes, lanchonetes e bistrôs. Prefiro apoiar pequenas lojas/empresas e por isso raramente entro em grandes empresas como a Starbucks.
Mas dentro de agora três anos eu estava três vezes nele e cada vez que eu via esta sereia semelhante a uma criatura. Pessoalmente eu acho assustador e assustador.
Esse logotipo também me surpreendeu, eu esperava um grão de café ou uma xícara como logotipo, mas uma criatura marinha de duas caudas? Como é que isso é possível?
Como a pergunta tinha me ocupado, segui este pensamento.

A diferença sutil é que as antigas sirenes eram retratadas como criaturas de pássaros e as melusinas como criaturas de peixes cobra.

De acordo com uma das muitas lendas, Melusine era filha de um alto rei escocês e uma fada. Melusine tinha poderes mágicos e quando seu pai a tratou injustamente, Melusine o trancou em uma prisão mágica. Sua mãe estava com raiva por esta ação, e é por isso que ela amaldiçoou Melusine. Um dia por semana, sábado, que era considerado Dia da Terra, Melusine teve que se transformar em um semi-ser. As serpentes freqüentemente aparecem historicamente e estão intimamente associadas à nobreza ou governantes, como o lendário imperador chinês Fu Xi, que de acordo com a lenda também tinha um corpo de serpente.

A mitologia de Melusine na Europa remonta ao século XII. Mas também na Grécia antiga há vestígios deste ser. Também na África Ocidental, as deusas do mar e dos rios eram adoradas na forma destas sereias de cauda dupla.

Os dois rabos de peixe espalhados podem ser bem interpretados como posições de nascimento. No Engadine, as melusinas são portanto associadas com riqueza e bênçãos infantis.

No simbolismo cristão, a melusina com as caudas de peixe espalhadas representa a sedução sexual. Sua aparição nos portais da igreja pretende ser um aviso para não ser seduzida pelo "poder demoníaco da sexualidade", embora também possa refletir o outro lado da moeda e possa levá-la a fazê-lo.

Pessoalmente, acho um grão de café ainda mais simples e atraente! Mas agora eu finalmente sei o que essa criatura assustadora significa no Starbucks....off agora.... Eu preciso de um bom café!

Starbuck's Logo

Die Augen scheinen liebevoll, verfügen. Diese wellenförmigen Haare und die siegreiche Sternenkrone ... Das sogenannte Siren-Logo, welches seit 2011 das Logo von Starbucks ist, hat eine sehr alte Bedeutung.

Ich liebe Kaffee, Cafeterias, Restaurants, Snack Bars und Bistros. Am sich unterstütze ich lieber kleine Geschäfte und desgalb gehe ich nur selten in große Ketten wir Starbucks.
Doch innerhalb von nun drei Jahren war ich dreimal drin und jedes mal erblickte ich dieses Meerjungfrau ähnliche Abbild. Persönlich finde ich es creepy und scary.
Mich hat dieses Logo auch noch verwundert, eher habe ich mit einer Kaffeebohne oder Tasse als Logo gerechnet, doch eine zweischwänzige Meereskreatur? Wie kommt das denn nun?
Da mich die Frage beschäftigt hatte, ging ich diesem Gedanken nach.

Ursprung des Logos

Auf der hand liegt, dass Lippincott die Sirene nicht von Grund auf neu erfunden hat. Dieses Logo war schon seit dem allerersten Starbucks-Standort 1971 das Wahrzeichen Starbucks.

Es heißt offiziell, dass die Bilder, welche aus einem maritimen Buch, stammen, die Gründer inspiriert haben und sie diese deshalb als Logo des Coffeeshops in Seattle wählten.

Welch tiefe Bedeutung das Symbol eigentlich hat.

Das ursprüngliche Starbucks-Logo war das Bild einer "zweischwanzigen Meerjungfrau", welche oft fälschlicherweise als Sirene bezeichnet qird. Die griechische Mythologie lautet, dass Sirenen Seefahrer vor der Küste einer Koralleninsel im Pazifik, die auch als “Starbuck Island5“ bekannt ist, zum Schiffbruch verleiteten. Offiziell heißt es, dass dieses Bild als Logo ausgesucht wurde, um jeden Kaffee Liebhaber von der ganzen Welt, wie eine Sirene, anzulocken und zu verführen.

Doch Sirenen sind nicht gleich Sirenen...wenn man es genau betrachtet hat Starbucks eine Melusine als Logo. Dieses zweischwänzige Meereswesen ist ebenso an manchen Kirchentoren zu betrachten. Der feine Unterschied ist, dass antike Sirenen als Vogelwesen dargestellt wurden und die Melusinen als Schlangen-Fisch Wesen.

Nach einer von vielen Legenden war Melusine die Tochter eines schottischen Hochkönigs und einer Fee. Melusine hatte magische Kräfte und als ihr Vater sie ungerecht behandelte, sperrte Melusine ihn in ein magisches Gefänginis. Ihre Mutter war erzürnt für diese Aktion, weshalb sie Melusine verfluchte. An einen Tag in der Woche, und zwar den Samstag, welcher als Tag der Erde galt, musste sich Melusine in ein Halbwesen verwandeln. Schlangen erscheinen geschichtlich oft und stehen eng in Verbindung mit Adel oder Herrschern, wie z.B. dem legendären chinesischen Kaiser Fu Xi, der laut Sage auch einen Schlangenleib hatte.

Die Mythologie der Melusine geht in Europa auf das 12. Jahrhundert zurück. Doch auch im antiken Griechenland gibt es Spuren von diesem Wesen. Ebenfalls wurden in Westafrika Meeres- und Flussgöttinnen in Form dieser doppelschwänziger Nixen angebetet.

Die beiden gespreizt gehaltenen Fischschwänze können gut als Gebärstellung interpretiert werden. Im Engadin werden Melusinen daher mit Reichtum und Kindersegen in Verbindung gebracht.

In der christlichen Symbolik steht die Melusine mit den gespreizten Fischschwänzen erstmal für die sexuelle Verführung. Ihr Erscheinen an Kirchenportalen soll eine Warnung darstellen, sich von der „dämonischen Macht der Sexualität" nicht verführen zu lassen, obgleich es auch die andere Seite der Medaille widerspiegeln kann und dazu auffordern könnte.

Ich persönlich finde eine Kaffeebohne immer noch einfacher und ansprechender! Doch nun weiß ich endlich was diese komische Kreatur bei Starbucks bedeutet...Kaffee Zeit nun!
