Water heated under pressure underground by hot magma can birst onto the surfacein a ferocious jet of steam and hot water called a geyser. Thecbiggest geysers are hundreds of metres hifh.

Thick and thin magma
Volcanoes take many forms but the most explosive volcanoes occur near subduction zones where the collision of tectonic platers creates a very thick, sticky 'acid' magma that clogs up the volcano easily. Where plates are pulling apart, the magma is less acid and runs freely.

Cinder volcanoes
Most volcanoes are made of solidified lava but some are mounds of ash.

When the lava is quite runny, if floods out far and wide creating a broad genlty sloping 'shield' volcano.

The thick lava from explosive volcanoes piles up steeply around the volcano creating a cone. In 'strato' volcanoes alternate layers of ash and lava build up as ash falls on the lava flow from each eruption.
