Let's save Orangutans! Say : "NO" to palm oil!

in #nature5 years ago

Orangutan - a type of large apes. The word Orangutan is derived from the Malay Orang Hutan meaning a forest man.

In nature, orangutans lives on Sumatra and Borneo. The number of wild orangutans is estimated at 45-69 thousand in Borneo and 7300 in Sumatra.

Orangutans are a critically endangered species.

It is estimated that the bornean orangutan population will decrease by 86% by 2025.

The biggest threat to the population of this apes is cutting down rainforests for growing oil palms, unfortunately 80% of worldwide palm oil comes from Borneo and Sumatra.

The destruction of their natural environment by felling and burning of rainforests and mining activities has intensified especially during the last decade. Most of these activities are illegal, and it reaches 37 out of 41 national parks that are officially excluded from forestry and mining.

Processed and harmful palm oil is a component of more than 50% consumed on a daily basis: breakfast cereals, cakes, shampoos, toothpastes and cleaning products.

Palm oil (and other palm fats) contains the highest levels of harmful, potentially carcinogenic chlorine derivatives among vegetable fats - following to raport of EFSA (European Food Safety Authority) from 2016.

I therefore encourage all those who are not indifferent to the fate of these wonderful animals to change their eating habits.

Say "NO" to palm oil and improve your own health and save Orangutans!
