Slow Mo - Amputee Mantis Consuming a Lantern Fly

in #nature6 years ago

Better than the Discovery Channel, as my one friend said when he saw this video I was able to capture out back by the crops.

These invasive Lantern Flies are a plentiful and easy food source for all of the praying mantis population around. And there are plenty of praying mantis abound. Perhaps the reason I don't see much issue with my farm in regards to the damage these pesky Lantern Flies can cause.

This veteran female mantis was on the hugel mound I was weeding when I discovered her scattering away from the pulling heaps.. I picked her up and placed her on the log and not soon after I went back and saw her still on the log, but also munching on a Lantern Fly! She must have just caught it.. that will be the next film to capture!
