Stinging Ant?

in #nature5 years ago

Hey everyone, I just love nature, if I had it my way I would go and live in the bush off the land. Solar panels, rain water harvesting, honey bees, aquaponics and more of all the good things in life.

I take many pics of nature, probably 90% of all my content is based on the wonder of nature.

On this fine day I was 'chilling' outside drinking some home-made ginger beer which my dad @quailbreeder recently taught me to make, and this little guy came strolling by.

At first I thought to myself WOW a big 'ASS' and with a fat stinger, but upon closer inspection noticed this was by no means an ant, but an ANT KILLER. ... Any ideas what this may be?

This fierce little guy is a wasp. With no wings sadly. How on earth he lost his wings is anyone's guess. We have 6 dogs on the property but if it was any of them I am not too sure this wasp would be around to tell the tale? Never the less I found this rather fascinating. He was in perfect shape, other than having no wings.

What was really interesting is how he kept trying to fly, but was obviously not able to. He would walk to the edge of the stick veraciously attempt to flap what used to be his wings, take a leap, and fall to the ground. Time and again this would happen.

I was careful not to let him climb on my fingers, this did however happen a few times. These are generally very aggressive creatures, it would seem however been 'wingless' he lost his aggression too and did not sting me, to my surprise.

I handled him with care, took a few more pics and set him in the bush.

Poor guy. He does look incredibly ant like without his wings. When I first saw the picture and the title mentioning the sting, I thought maybe you had a bull ant. Do you get them there?

Hey no not as fas as I know they indigenous to the States? We have tons of those small argentinian black ants they taking over, not good for my bees we had a swarm move out thanks to them :( Cheer$;)

I don't know; we have them in Australia. My introduction to them was when my daughter got stung by one when it crawled up her trouser leg shortly after we arrived here. I couldn't believe there were ants with stingers!

We have some tiny ants too. I wonder if they are native or the same as yours. They're real nippers, ruthless things!
