Birds in Partial Sun the Day After an Icestorm

in #nature6 years ago

It was a little bit sunny last Wednesday, the day after it rained ice. Then there was no sun until yesterday! This is the Red-bellied Woodpecker, a funny bird who runs off big birds if necessary, with utter confidence, and always alone on his/her own. The Red-bellied Woodpecker is a great bird to watch. She has a gray and red head, the male has a fully red head. You can see her "red belly" feathers:

Snarfing snowbird. I'm surprised I've never seen a hawk come down and get one of these vulnerable feeder birds. I'm glad I've never seen that! Cats love my yard, that's for sure.

The snowbird, also called Northern Junco or Slate-colored Junco (I've heard Dark-eyed Junco, too), is a migratory songbird that arrives in the American Midwest around Thanksgiving and leaves in early spring to go back where it must be cold as f-ing hell, like the f-ing Arctic Circle. Aren't they cute? Who winters where it's cold? Silly bird. (This pic was taken Feb. 5th.)

And always this guy:

Thank you, and Steem on,
