Hi Steemit family!

Today I bring you one of the most exotic birds in the world, is a natural emblem for the South American continent, in addition to being beautiful for its shape and bright colors, I'm talking about the Toucan. Come with me to know some characteristics of this impressive bird.

Its habitat is the tropical forests of South America, one of the most outstanding features of this bird is its huge beak accompanied by small teeth that look more like a hacksaw, they are very light birds despite their huge size, even lighter than other birds that are light in themselves thanks to having hollow bones where air is distributed. Their size ranges from 18 to 70 centimetres in length.

His scientific name is Ramphastidae and as his name indicates they belong to the family of the ranfástidas being a great number of copies of this family arriving to surpass the 50 with six genera.

Although their habitat and greater concentration is in South America can also be found in smaller numbers in Mexico and Central America, in the jungles of the South American continent can be in tropical forests almost at sea level or 3000 meters high in some parts of the mountain range of the former.

Its name comes from the Guarani language Tupi or Tucana which means big beak. And it has a huge beak that contracts very well with its shape, its colors are very striking as intense red, apple green, yellow with a plumage usually deep black, is also recognized by a particular sound that this bird emits.

The beak has like small you have to resemble a saw, with them they can break and eat different types of fruits, in addition the beak is used a lot in the mating ritual.

Their diet is based on fruit intake, so their stomach and other digestive system is prepared for absorption, the rest will be discarded via fecal and urinary in a matter of hours, its main fruits are mango, banana, tunas, wild strawberries, and other variety of fruits that can offer tropical forests.

As a name at the beginning the habitat of this beautiful bird is America are endemic to this part of the world, being the tropical region of South America the most common to find them especially in Venezuela which is recognized as the country where is the largest population of toucans on the planet.

source

As most of the birds the toucans are monogamous, they have a partner for all their life, their sexual maturity reaches them at 5 years of age, for the mating season they look for some cavity in the trees or nests abandoned by other birds, so they do not build their own nests, a great part of the productivity of this bird develops around the climatic season, therefore between the months of May and July that coincide with the rainy season is where the toucans are ready for their sexual ritual.

source

They lay between 4 and 5 eggs at most, the eggs hatch after 20 days, and once in the world they will be fed for 40 days until they can eat by their own means.

source

Despite having a large population of toucans, they have been threatened by the depredation of their habitat by the forest industry in the Amazon jungle, and they are also regularly hunted to be sold as exotic birds.

It's really a shame that such beautiful and unique creatures are becoming threatened and in some cases endangered or extinct. We need to wake up and be more cognizant of our surroundings before it truly is too late. Thanks for sharing the beautiful pictures and informative words.
