Kjerna, the Pulpit rock in Northern Norway.

Hike to Kjerna a 650 m peak in Tysjord

Kjerna is Ofotens Preikestol (Pulpit rock). From the road in Ulvika, beneath the mountain you can see the characteristic pulpit profile in the vertical source of the mountain. It looks spectacular and it's also when you're on top. The suction in your stomach when standing on the edge is almost indescribable.

From the road and up it takes around 1,5 hour with view to the surrounding mountains. We discovered a trail further up the mountain and thought it was a roundtrip down from Kjerna. After the hike I checked and from Kjerna it is possible to go to a peak called Stortinden 847 m (marked on the map). From here I think the view is even more spectacular, so maybe another time I take the hike up.

Below the mountain you can see the pulpit profile where the rocks are lighter.

The area with smooth granite is a great hike. It is also very popular to ride a bike up.

The peak with the flat top is called Stetind and has (unofficially) been voted to be the National Mountain of Norway. The mountain rises more than 1390m up from sea level and form a nearly flat summit plateau.

From the top you can see toward Vestfjorden and Lofoten. The earlier post "Toward the west-Lofoten peninsula" is taken from Kjerna.

My daughter Ida and Thea on the edge of the Pulpit rock. They wanted to sit on the stone on the edge but I did not dare to let them sit there (many does).

A couple of rough-legged hawk (Fjellvåk) hedges in the mountain wall below the top. When hiding behind a big stone I was lucky to take this picture when the bird landed. It was quite a long distance, but a great experience to see the birds soar at our height

And of course the ballerinas had to do something......

If you are in the area I will recommend this hike to everybody. If you take the hike in the evening it is possible to watch the midnight sun. Hope you enjoyed, and If you wanted to take the hike after reading, I'm happy. Have a great weekend everybody out there.

Best regards
Harald
