Smallest desert in the world?

in #nature6 years ago (edited)

The little patch named The Red Desert, with the Mtamvuna River which flows
into the Indian Ocean, and the bridge between KZN and Eastern Cape.

My little village of Port Edward, on the border of KwaZulu-Natal and Eastern Cape, has the world's smallest desert, known as the Red Desert. It is only 200 metres across and 11 hectares in its entirety, and is surrounded by the lush, tropical vegetation of the Red Desert Nature Reserve.

I'm fortunate to work at a preschool within walking distance of this national treasure!

Different theories exist as to its origins, from excessive overgrazing to extra-terrestrial landings! The red colour is actually due to the high iron content, and the dune formations known as “yardangs” were sculpted by wind. Together with the rhizoliths (signs of ancient plant roots) it has an erosional appearance. The area was declared a nature reserve in 2015 and the site is rich with threatened vegetation, special endemic plants and stone artefacts.

Beautiful place! one more proof of the variety of ecosystem that we can still enjoy on our planet.

That's for sure @omarbalzar. And the view from there, as you can see, is stunning.

That's really interesting. I had no clue! Have you ever been there? Are there restrictions to entering the area since it's home to so many endangered species?

I've edited slightly in the last few minutes - I work at a preschool less than 1km from this site! No vehicles or motorcycles are allowed, and no removal of anything is permitted. There is no actual policing of the area though. It's such an amazing part of the country - I've lived here for 25 years.

Cute little desert, it would be cool to live near and have a place to isolate myself from world for a few days.

It is amazing, and I can walk to it from the school where I work. The whole area is a nature reserve and you can definitely isolate yourself.

Thanks @bitgeek for this information :) Dust is even smaller than plankton! I must admit I am extremely grateful for the generous upvotes.

Oh my god... I would love to see this place! It's really funny that nothing has taken over the desert floor to grow.

Thanks for sharing

If you ever decide to visit South Africa .... :) It's probably because of the iron in the soil, and the excessive overgrazing which stripped it of any nutrients.

If I go, for sure I will visit that place!

Very unique place, I like it as you say, its surrounded buy vegetation, and the soil is different, it's a good place to go visit.

It is unique, some say it's like a miniature version of the Arizona desert. And it's on top of the Umtamvuna River gorge, so the view is magnificent.
