White-faced Heron Fishing for Crabs

in #nature6 years ago (edited)

While waiting for someone at the hospital I had a choice to either sitting in a cramped waiting room or driving down to the shore where I could enjoy the sea view and the birds. I chose the latter. I only saw nine species of birds. Among them was this White-faced Heron, Egretta novaehollandiae. It's called a heron but you'll notice it is in the same genus as Egrets. It was patiently stalking prey among the rock pools. It caught at least one small fish but for the most part it was catching small crabs as can be seen in the photos.

If anyone is interested, the other species I saw were, Australasian Gannet, Black-faced cormorant, Sooty Oystercatcher, Masked Lapwing, Silver Gull, Pacific Gull, European Starling and House sparrow.
