The Rainbow Mountains of China, located in Landform Geological Park are no doubt one of the geological wonders of the world. These mountains are famous for their strange colors and it looks like that the rainbow is painted all over top of mountains. It is covered over 200 square miles in northwest of china.

How these colorful mountains are formed? These are actually cretaceous siltstones and sandstones which got deposited before the formation of Himalayan Mountains. The iron and other trace minerals were deposited in sand and silt which give the peculiar color to the mountains.

The layering of sedimentary mineral deposits was done over millions of years which further strengthened the colors. Due to weather effect, together with oxygen and water, iron is converted into iron oxide which gives the rock the dark red color.

Around 24 million years of natural erosion, the mountains gave the distinct layers and brilliant colors. It looks that someone painted across the mountain with a large can of spray paint. This natural formation is really mind blowing.
