Solitary bee
When we think of bees, most of us only consider the honeybee, or maybe bumblebees. In fact, our gardens are filled with many other kinds of bees and they play an important role in pollination, although they don't make honey. There are over 1000 different kinds of bees found in South Africa alone.
The little bee pictured here is a carpenter bee and they make their nests inside hollow stalks. They are solitary bees, meaning that they don't live in colonies like honey bees do.
