Spring fever anyone?

Those of us in cold climates are always on the lookout for the first signs of spring.
As a homesteader I am itching for the day I don't have to swap frozen waterbuckets in 40mph icy winds. With the changing climate the transition from summer to fall to winter usually means a large amount of rain and wind followed by a rapid freeze. After that it's just a continuous gray sky for a couple of months.
No wonder we are looking everywhere to find just the tiniest traces of spring.

These elderberries for example can give my excitement a huge boost.
This morning I also spotted the first migrating geese, sheer signs of spring folks!
What does a homesteader do when he sees that mr. hubbart?

Well.. there is barely enough light yet to start seeds so let's do a homesteaders homework: chickenmath!
Pre-spring we usually have some time on our hands to take care of these little raptors.

This year the main focus will be on two breeds. One is the Sussex for which I will establish a new purebreed flock. The other are my beloved Jersey Giants. I tried most large chicken breeds but these are still my favorite. Great egglayers, lots of meat but by FAR the best flavor of meat and they meet the requirement of handling our weather conditions. They are outside foraging in wet and windy conditions much more then the other breeds we tried.
Anyway, since the Jersey's do consume more feed we try to mix them with some of the Sussex this year too. I am very curious how that turns out.
