Hard Working Honey Bees

in #nature5 years ago

Where would we be without honey bees? We would have less food. According to the American Beekeeping Federation, "approximately 1/3 of all the food Americans eat is indirectly delivered from honey bee pollination."

And don't forget about the delicious honey they make for us. A worker bee only lives for 6-8 weeks during the summer and in that time, it only produces 1/12 of a teaspoon of honey.

The worker bees which are infertile females, do all of the work. They prepare the food, feed the queen, babies and drones, they guard the hive, and they keep the hive cool in the summer and warm in the winter by flapping their wings. It's no wonder they usually die from wearing their wings out.

Here is a honey bee in flight!
