The lightning bug mating season is over, but try telling that to these two love bugs. I caught them in the act on my trash can lid on July 31st. Mating season is usually mid June to mid July and that is when you see them flashing their lights at night, looking for a mate. Today is August 10th and the nights are dark once again.

Female lightning bugs have laid their 100 eggs each, in the soil and the eggs are ready to hatch. The larvae which look like worms, will live in the soil all winter long, and we won't see the new adults until next summer.

Enjoy the end of the summer and "keep smiling!"
