Oregano harvest, few facts and use of this aromatic herb, bokehlicious gallery II off-grid, wild herbs, wildcraft, Nature as medicine, sustainability, bokeh photography
It is this time of year, high up in the Alpujarra mountains, that oregano is ready for harvest. Armed with scissors and basket I went on for some collecting. Immersing in the melodies of cikadas and the aromas of rozmarin and oregano growing in various places here, I started making my way through the bushes and sometimes roses (ouch!). After couple of hours and few courses to the dining area to empty the basket, I managed to collect most of the oregano in the northern part of the land.
Whereas my earlier job that day was yummy (there was a lot of raspberries in the area where I was pulling out weeds, so I was snacking on hem occasionally :) ) , this time it was my sense of smell that got treated to an aromatic feast.
Having all the harvest on the table I divided it to smaller bundles and tied them up with a natural jute cord to hang them for drying in our cosy, rustic kitchen.
Below you can see some pictures :)
A little bit about oregano
The word "oregano" comes from Greek. It was believed that the herb was created by the Goddess Aphrodite to symbolize joy in her garden - oregano means "joy of the mountains".
This little herb is reach in oxidants, calcium, iron, magnesium and vitamins K and B-6.
Use
Due to two powerful compounds: carvacrol and thymol, oregano has anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Across different cultures in the world it was believed to help with wide spectrum of ailments: rheumatism, toothache, indigestion, coughing fits, fever, vomiting, upset stomach, eczema, flu, ear infections, fevers and allergies. It was also used in spells for happiness, tranquility, luck, health, protection and letting go of a loved one. When worn during sleeping was supposed to bring psychic dreams (used by ancient Greeks with a purpose to find out who their future spouse would be :) ).
Oregano oil is a natural alternative to antibiotics.
Most common in italian cousine, especially for pizza and pizza sauces.
