Miley Cyrus Black Mirror episode might be the worst one **SPOILERS**

in #netflix5 years ago

I would just come out and say that it is the worst one but then I remembered Season 1's first episode bout the Prime Minister getting romantically involved with a pig.... I think that one might still be the worst because it nearly convinced me to never watch another Black Mirror.

Warning: Spoilers ahead!

Anyway, Season 5 episode 3 which was entitled “Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too” is pretty bad for a variety of reasons.

Most Black Mirror episodes have a dark premise where it is kind of a "warning" of sorts about the dangers of technology and the darkness that can be introduced into our lives as a result. This episode seemed to be a "how can we get Miley Cyrus involved?" episode.

Now don't get me totally wrong, I was actually impressed with Miley's acting ability. She is quite good and since I have never seen her in anything else (if she is in anything else) I was quite happy with her performance and would actually like to see her in other stuff. The problem I had with this episode is that it was.... ummmm... kind of dumb

The story centers around a pop sensation named "Ashley-O" (played by Miley Cyrus) who is admired by teens and is actually pretty relatable since there are a variety of acts that have existed throughout recent years that seem to be just like this. Ashley-O appears to be happy with her life in the public eye but is actually not even in charge of her own life or even the creative elements of her songs (Brittney Spears springs to mind if we are looking for a real-life example of this.)

On her own Ashley comes up with some good stuff but it gets changed by her management team who seek to cater to an idiot audience. I have no doubt that this actually does exist in the musical world although I would argue about the music actually coming from the star in question since most of the time the pop stars of today have their music written for them.

Ashley-O's management team releases a doll that sounds like her and is marketed to her fans but in the end the "personality" of these dolls actually is Ashley's entire brain and therefore, her consciousness. This results in a fan unlocking the entire brain and finding out the "truth" from her toy and therefore saving the day where her goth sister actually ends up in a punk rock band with the "real" Ashley-O in the end.

The usual Black Mirror dread that occurs in an episode is completely missing from this one and aside from Cyrus' performance, this episode is totally dead in the water. Why they saved this one for last in the recent season is a mystery to me but probably has a lot to do with the star power of Miley Cyrus.

Black Mirror remains one of my favorite shows of all time and I will still look forward to episodes in the future. The fact that each installment is completely unrelated to other stories is the main reason why I enjoy it so much. This one was a dud by my and most people's standards, so I suppose I should be happy that no future ep's will connect with this one. :)

Sort:

The season suffered from way too many plot holes and no real depth to any of the characters or narrative.

This episode, in particular, was more suited to a kids movie than Black Mirror.....basically Disney +

I didn't watch it because I figured it would be bad, even though my sister, who initially felt the same, enjoyed it.
Just the other day I watched 15,000,000 merits again. What a sad story...it gets me every time

that is one of the best episodes in the series. That and the one where your social rating determines your access to things in life might be the top two out of all of them.

Ah you mean Nosedive? Apparently something similar to that is already in place in China

I've only watched a few Black Mirror episodes (namely the first few), but I think it's very interesting how the directors selected a real-life singer to act as a fictional singer on a show as opposed to another actor/actress. Sadly, from what it sounds like the episode is about, I think that's the unfortunate reality for some singers out there. Nevertheless, thanks for sharing this review with us! Looking forward to reading future posts.

Watched all the episodes of black mirror season 5 and yeah, I agree with you @gooddream. I really got amazed after watching the first one where falcon from avengers (dont remember his real name atm😅) played a next gen VR like game and fell in love with the lady character in the game which was actually being played by his PAL. I really enjoted the episode and thought this season will be a breathtaking one. The 2nd episode was also pretty good but in the last, ashley-o just ruined my mood.

To be fair, it was not milley's fault after all. She performed well. But somehow the content was not up to the mark to be a Black mirror level.

I am also upset that it only containes 3 episodes which costed me just 1 noon to end it.

Waiting for the upcoming seasons!

yeah... the last one didn't even seem like Black Mirror... it was just odd.

I've been having a hard time getting the motivation to check this new season out. They've been rehashing a lot of the same plots throughout the seasons, just with a bit of a different twist. Kinda just makes my penis flaccid when I see an episode visiting the premise of our consciousness being stored on the cloud for the 3rd time.

Though, maybe I should check this season out if for nothing but seeing how bad this episode actually is. I never watched the first episode as I was told to stay away from it. But, there have been a few episodes here and there that I thought were fucking awful, so I'm curious how this compares. Like, the one with the terminator dogs. I could not suspend my disbelief for that episode at all and just thought it was a huge stinker for a few different reasons. Just absolutely some stinky, murderous dog shit basically.

oh, i am surprised to hear that. I thought the one with the robot dogs was one of the best ones and not just because of the story but because of the big reveal at the end and also the cinematography was done really well and kept the episode tense.

I'd have to watch it again to remember exactly what issues I had, but I remember there was 3 or 4 things that really rubbed me the wrong way about the episode. I couldn't take it seriously, I predicted several things before they happened, and I laughed throughout it here and there. It was just not working for me at all.

The plot is 80% of the success of movies or episodes of seasons of series. The topic of importing a personality like software into hardware (a body or a machine) is fascinating and movies or episodes touching this subject have so much potential.

Everything makes sense when we discovered that it was really a script for a special episode of Hannah Montana adapted to Black Mirror. lol
