Wichtig war auch der Nachweis, dass Neutrinos eine (wenn auch nur sehr geringe) Masse besitzen. Die beiden Forscher Takaaki Kajita und Arthur B. McDonald wurden dafür im Jahr 2015 mit dem Nobelpreis für Physik ausgezeichnet.
