For the weekend of children's day, we had a three day weekend. It happened like this because the holiday is May 5th, which was a Saturday, so we got Monday off! They call this a substitution holiday, a concept I think a lot of Americans could benefit from 😄 To celebrate the holiday, I went to a board game cafe a couple of times with friends!

One the first day I met my friend in the downtown area of Gwangju called Chungjang-ro (충장로). This area is my regular hangout spot in the city because of the access I have to various kinds of cafes to study in. Also, one of the cafes has a smoking room, which is a big bonus! I spent most of the day studying and writing, so winding down with some games would be nice. I met her, and we went out have some dinner, well I had dinner she ate already.

On the next day, I met a different friend in the same area. I arrived first and wrote down my blog post for the day you can check that out here if you are interested. From there we went to have some lunch at Sandria, a franchise sandwich shop. If you see this place I recommend, their selection is pretty good and is kind of like Subway without the options. Good choice since we are both trying to eat healthily and she more dietary restrictions than me.

With full bellies, were are off to the game cafe!

Dice Cafe (boardgame cafe)

These first two images are from an older blog, and I posted the sources along with them. Check that blog out as well. The location is still the same along with the sign, but the interior is a bit different. The beautiful thing about the cafe is that when you order at least two drinks, you get two hours of table time. That amount of time is plenty for what we need, get a few good sized games in and not have to pay anything for them. The drinks were surprisingly good! One would think that they would cut back on that quality, but you would be pleasantly wrong.

The selection of games is pretty good. The downside to this is my inability to understand complicated game instructions, but you learn, and it also helps to go with a Korean friend sometimes. lol

Battleship

This was the game I really wanted to play at the cafe! I previously made an English game based on the mechanics of this game, but my students were not interested in it. So, I came here to play the legitimate game! Also, to show my Korean friend that it is not that hard of a concept. If I could learn this game as a Kindergartener, my middle school students can learn it.

See what I did here? I made a 'T' lol

Foolproof!

That got way too close... if she called B7 instead of A6, I would have lost.

Ghost Board

I don't think that is what this game is actually called, but I am going with it. Ghost Board is a German game, and the concept is similar to checkers. You want to get one of your blue ghosts to one of your opponent's back corners. Do that, and you win. You move and capture pieces like checkers; however, if you catch four red ghosts, you lose. So, you want to trick your opponent!

This is an amazing snack! Its name is Homerun Ball, and they are like little pastries with creamy chocolate in them!.... I swear I try to eat healthy lol

Day two of Games

Nothing like classic Jenga to start things out!

Mancala

So with this game, we found out that we learned different rules. Game experts say Mancala is one of the oldest games ever created. So, there are over a dozen different ways to play this one game. We got it figured out though, and in the process, both learned new styles of play!

Tumbling Monkeys

This is a must play when I come here, I played it both days. Basic Idea has you put sticks in the tree till they are all in there, pour the monkeys in, shake up the tree, and then roll a dice each turn to determine what color stick to pull from top to bottom. The person the causes the most monkeys to fall out is the loser.

This time around, I snacked a little a little better. Bananas, dried mango, and coconut chips as opposed to the sugar rush from yesterday 😂
