New map of southeast Syria after ISIS scores big advance
BEIRUT, LEBANON (2:20 P.M.) - One week ago, the Islamic State (ISIS) launched a big attack against the U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in the southeastern region of Syria.
The Islamic State managed to score a big advance during this attack, resulting in the withdrawal of the Syrian Democratic Forces from several towns near the Iraqi border.
Among the areas seized by the Islamic State last weekend were the towns of Baghouz Fouqani and Al-Sousah, which put them within striking distance of the Iraqi border for the first time in several weeks.
According to a new report from local activists, the Islamic State is now fighting the Syrian Democratic Forces at the Baghouz Mountain.
If the Islamic State is able to capture this large mountain, they will be able to impose fire control over the nearby town of Baghouz Tahtani.
Baghouz Tahtani is a small town that is located along the Iraqi-Syrian border near the key city of Albukamal.
