Death sentence for 20 person in Bangladesh in granade attack in 2004

The Tribunal has ordered the execution of 20 people including former State Minister for Home Affairs Lutfozzaman Babar in the murder case of the grenade attack on the Awami League General Assembly on Aug 21, 2004. Apart from BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman, 17 people have been given life imprisonment.

Shahed Noor Uddin, the temporary fast trial tribunal of Dhaka, adjacent to the former Central Jail on Wednesday (10th October) declared the verdict.
In this morning, 31 accused were sent to the tribunal in the morning.

In this case, 225 people of 511 witnesses were examined in the case. Apart from this, more than 20 people have been given evidence.

According to the case, the present Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina survived for a little while in a grenade attack on August 21, 2004. In the attack, 24 people, including Awami League's female affairs editor and former President Zillur Rahman's wife Ivy Rahman, were killed. More than 400 activists of the party were injured.

Sub-Inspector Faruk Ahmed of Motijheel Police Station filed the case with the plaintiff after the incident. The police station first investigated the case. Later Dhaka Metropolitan Police Detective Police took charge of the investigation. Later, the case comes under the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

CID's senior ASP Fazlul Kabir gave charge sheet against 22 people, including Munna, on June 11, 2008. The tribunal granted it on 3 August 2009 when the prosecution appealed for further investigation. CID Superintendent of Police Abdul Kahhar Akhand got the responsibility to investigate the case.

On July 3, 2011, Tarique Rahman, along with 30 others, gave two chargesheets in the name of murder and explosives under the name of 52 people. The former secretary general of Jamaat Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mujahid, the leader of the militant leader Mufti Hannan and JMB member Shahidul Alam Bipta were sentenced to death due to the death penalty.

As a result, the number of accused now stands at 49. There are 18 fugitives including Tarique Rahman. Among the remaining accused, 31 are in jail.

Commander (retd) Saiful Islam Duke, former Inspector General of Police Ashraful Huda, Police Officer Shahudul Haque, Khoda Box Chowdhury, Special Police Superintendent Ruhul Amin, former ASP Munshi Atiqur Rahman, Abdur Rashid, former Ward Commissioner Ariful Islam Arif, members of militant organization Hujee Abu Bakker alias Hafez Selim Hawlader, Shahdat Ullah alias Jewel, Maulana Sheikh Abdus Salam, Abdul Majed Bhat alias Yusuf Bhat, Abdul Malek alias Golam Mohammad, Maulana Abdur Rouf alias Abu Homaiya alias Pir Saheb, Maulana Sabbir Ahmed alias Abdul Hannan Sabbir, Maulana Shawkat Osman alias Shaikh Farid, Mahibullah alias Mahizur Rahman alias Abi, Maulana Abu Sayeed alias Dr. Zafar, Abul Kalam Azad alias Bulbul, Jahangir Alam, Hafez Moulana Abu Taher, Hossain Ahmad Tamim, Moin Uddin Sheikh alias Mufti Moin alias Khwaja alias Abu Jaddal alias Masum Billah, Arif Hasan alias Sumon, Rafiqul Islam alias Sabuj and Hafez Maulana Yahya
