Guaidó, a President Without Territory, Without an Army - But With the Bitter Taste of Defeat

Published 2019-03-02 19:20:10 by Guest Author in Colombia, Headline-News, Latin-America, Opinions, Venezuela

By Luis Hernández Navarro Ureña, the Venezuelan side near the border of Colombia. It’s the manager’s loneliness. Bogota, Colombia, has become the seat of government of the self-proclaimed president of Venezuela, Juan Guaidó. He does not command the army of his country. He is protected by the troops of a neighboring nation. He has no control of any territory. His orders are not obeyed by any authority. Even his former opposition allies do not put their hands in the fire for him. At the worst moment of the February 23 crisis, almost none of them opened their mouths to encourage... Continue ->

Published 2019-03-02 18:54:35 by Guest Author in Eurasia, Headline-News, Opinions, Russia

By Anna Andrianova and Yevgenia Pismennaya - Russian President Vladimir Putin is preparing for war. War, the main weapons in which will not be hypersonic missiles and nuclear torpedoes, which he boasted about for a whole year. Putin has built a financial fortress, which, according to government officials and Kremlin advisers, will protect the economy from strikes and encourage the US and allies to assess Russia's military capabilities and intentions.. Putin has been striving for this goal since he came to power at the turn of the millennium. The problem is becoming more urgent against the background of the next... Continue ->

Published 2019-03-02 18:13:16 by Joaquin Flores in Headline-News, Iran, Iraq, Mena

BAGHDAD - The leader of Iraq’s National Wisdom Movement Seyed Ammar al-Hakim said his country has not given in to Washington’s pressures to comply with the US sanctions against Iran. In comments last Thursday, Hakim said the current Iraqi government has not bowed to US pressures to place sanctions that Washington has imposed against Iran. “The Iraqi government tries to keep the balance in its relations with other countries in accordance with the international law, Iraq’s interests, as well as moral and humanitarian values,” the cleric added. "The incumbent government in Baghdad has a deeper understanding of the regional conditions,"... Continue ->

Here are Five Reasons Ukraine Can Never Survive as a State

Published 2019-03-02 17:49:03 by Guest Author in Eurasia, Headline-News, Opinions, Russia, Ukraine

There is nothing innately Ukrainian in its 'state', it is an identity defined in opposition to what it wants not to be - it is an incurable condition, and it's useless to treat. By Boris Andreev The First reason Any normal state should have its own historical territory with which its heroic myth is connected. There must be heroes who defended this land from enemies and mastered, cultivated and glorified it. Russia, for example, has so many heroes that would be enough for a dozen countries. Ukraine is trying to find heroes for itself, but so far it turns out there aren't... Continue ->

Pakistan's Playing with Wahhabist Fire: Iran and India Must Join to Create a Stability Zone

Published 2019-03-02 16:48:22 by Curwen Ares Rolinson in Eurasia, Headline-News, India, Iran, Opinions, Pakistan

For some time now, I have been writing upon the strong viability of Indian-Iranian geopolitical co-operation; particularly in light of shared security concerns, and a most unfavourable 'short schrift' from the Americans meted out towards both on matters economic. This concept has, perhaps understandably (although invariably infuriatingly) received much push-back from voices that would identify as being on the "right wing", who almost seem to *prefer* the idea of being opposed by a monolithic "all Muslims together, all the time" than to concede they share a fundamental interest with many non-Sunni groups; and who are willfully blind to the actual... Rampant and Legalized Corruption: Ukraine may lose IMF funds and Visa status - Transparency International

Published 2019-03-02 13:48:01 by Joaquin Flores in Eurasia, Germany, Headline-News, Ukraine

BERLIN - If Ukraine does not find a quick solution on the issue of the Criminal Code article on illegal enrichment, there is a serious possibility that the visa-free regime with the European Union will be frozen. The same applies to financial assistance from the IMF, due to which the country largely is kept afloat in recent years. This is claimed in a statement by the Berlin based Transparency International. Transparency International is an authoritative non-governmental international organization against corruption, and promotes the study of the level of corruption by country, around the world. According to the organization, the scandalous... Continue ->

Lukashenko: "the Russian government must stop lobbying for the interests of oligarchs"

Published 2019-03-02 13:24:27 by Joaquin Flores in Belarus, Eurasia, Headline-News, Russia

MINSK - In Russia, big business has grown together with the government and lobbies its interests, and this practice paralyzes the development of relations between Moscow and Minsk, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko believes. At a meeting with journalists and representatives of the public, President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko demanded that the Russian authorities stop protecting the interests of the “oligarchic business”. It is necessary to stop the government of Russia to lobby these clans, these groups, as they are called - oligarchic. Big business has grown together with the authorities, pushing their questions, blocking our relations in the Union. The Belarusian... Continue ->

UN Rejects U.S Moves to Recognize Occupied Golan Heights as Israel

Published 2019-03-02 13:02:21 by Joaquin Flores in Headline-News, Israel, Mena, Syria

NEW YORK CITY - UN Special Envoy for Syria Geir O. Pedersen has underlined Syria’s sovereignty over the Golan Heights, rejecting a US congressional motion to recognize Israel's annexation of the occupied territory. “Obviously the Security Council is very clear that the Golan is Syrian territory, and the first aspect of [Resolution] 2254 is of course the territorial integrity of Syria,” Pedersen told reporters at a Security Council briefing on Syria held on Thursday in New York. He made the comments in response to a question regarding a bill introduced by Republican members of the US congress which seeks to... Continue ->

FLORES: Enter Nestor Makhno - Ukraine's Kiev Junta plays at 'National Anarchism'

Published 2019-03-02 12:50:06 by Joaquin Flores in Eurasia, Headline-News, Opinions, Russia, Ukraine

Europe's Rejection of Bandera leads Kiev straight to Makhno Ukraine has a serious image problem on its hands - in its vain search for a 'national identity' in a country whose name simply means 'borderland', it was natural that nazi collaborator Stepan Bandera would take center stage. This pro-Nazi, that is 'European' identity, which the U.S coup-installed Ukrainian leaders have promoted everywhere possible, and have largely re-legitimized, isn't boding too well with the majority of EU denizens. It's difficult to tell the story that Russia's Putin leads a 'far-right state', when the primary focus of its regional efforts have been... Continue ->

Op-ed: While Modi's Theatrics have Political Aim, India's Grievances with Pakistan are not Illegitimate

Published 2019-03-02 11:55:17 by Joaquin Flores in Eurasia, Headline-News, India, Opinions, Pakistan

image - Jaish-e-Mohammed training By Jay Tharappel - On the 24th of Feb, two days before the Indian airforce (IAF) claimed to have killed "300 terrorists" in "surgical strikes" in Pakistani held territory, the following appeared in Times of India, written by Swaminathan Aiyar, which accurately describes what the Modi government stands accused of, namely, making tall claims for political purposes that are not credible. "There remains innovative political theatre. Many old terrorist camps, or offices of terrorist leaders, may be mostly empty or inactive. Hence they may be unguarded or lightly guarded. Why not use covert action to blow... Continue ->

LAVROV: VIDEO - If U.S doesn't like you, expect your elections ''not to meet democratic standards'', Venezuela

Published 2019-03-02 09:37:36 by Joaquin Flores in Headline-News, Latin-America, Russia, United-States, Venezuela

By Drago Victorien - When asked by a CNN journalist about the likelihood of a direct US military intervention in Venezuela, Sergey Lavrov took us on a journey about the mantle of ''democracy'', the role of Elliott Abrams and how countries seem to ''not meet democratic standards'' when that country's policies do not fall in line with those of the United States - from yesterday's (1/03/2019) press conference with Vice President of Venezuela, Delcy Rodriguez. The United States will simply attempt to 'subjugate the disobedient'

I'd like to see more coverage of Xinjiang and issues affecting Uighurs. While I don't expect unbiased information, I'm not finding any elsewhere. Mark Twain noted that 'if you read the papers, you're misinformed. If you don't read the papers, you're uninformed.' I'd at least like to be able to know what not to believe.

Thanks!

Edit: thanks for the hearty laugh for the picture of Gauido deep in his natural habitat.
