Wil Wheaton attacks Pewdiepie - immediately regrets it

in #news5 years ago

What do you do if you are a D-list celebrity whose only current claim to fame is playing a caricature of himself on a sitcom that is slowly falling out of favor? Well it's simple really: you attack a far more successful person with unsubstantiated claims in order to draw attention to yourself.

Wil "where is the other "L"" Wheaton took to Facebook to decry the fact that they were suggesting that he join a Pewdiepie fan club by saying this

source

Because Felix (Pewdiepie) has nearly 100 million subscribers, the comments flew back at Wheaton fast and furiously until Wil first deactivated commenting and then deleted the post entirely. If you know anything about Pewd's fanbase, you can understand an awful lot of the comments were in fact memes and the reemergence of the trash dove was in full swing (bonus points for knowing what a trash dove is.)

As memes tend to be, a lot of them were intentionally over the top and pretending to support Wil by photoshopping Pewdiepie into many actual racist situations such as wearing SS clothes, being involved in various atrocities, being involved in the slave trade, and basically just a ton of things that Pewd's obviously had nothing to do with because he wasn't alive at the time.

Wil's opinion about Pewdiepie was based entirely on rumors and of course a Wall Street Journal article that attempted to salvage their own failing platform by attacking an individual that is far more successful at engaging today's market than they were. WSJ did initially see a surge in viewership and clicks but I hate that this tactic worked because it only encourages more nefarious behavior of exactly this sort.

We all know why Wheaton deleted the post. He did it for the same reason that Pepsi deleted that awful SJW commercial with Kylie Jenner and why YouTube Rewind disabled comments..... because the response they received was overwhelmingly negative and not the result they had hoped for.

I sincerely hope that this doesn't result in any sort of success for Wheaton, because if you are a d-list celebrity who can't break through to bigger things in the acting game, I think it is a dirty trick to attempt to create some sort of false controversy to draw attention to yourself.

I was delighted to see that that the "Shut up Wesley" meme was brought back and is now something that is commented on anything Wil posts. Wil reacted by insta-blocking anyone who posts these memes and one person who was actually a fan of Wheaton calmly suggested....

"If you thow S#^T, you shouldn't act all butthurt and surprised when some S#^T gets thrown back at you."

In other news, Pewds has again passed T-series in subscriber count.

PewDiePie has seriously become a star now. I haven't watched his videos but heard a lot about. and yes this new wil's fb comment was a hot topic of social media. anyways talking about trash dove, it's best ever meme was

It was hilarious.

good work on the trash dove... i still love those and post them on a regular basis.

Pewdiepie's case is quite curious, I have only seen two or three of his videos, but he seems to have a fairly important audience that is also loyal, especially considering that he is just a young man with his camera nothing more. I do not know if it's about envy, if it's jealousy, or if there's something else, but he constantly receives attacks, whenever I hear something about him it's because he's being accused of racism or something, and the few videos I saw did not seem like racists or anything that is accused, but I saw only a few. Of course, the simple fact of being famous will usually put him in the spotlight, especially if he has a lot of influence in a large audience without being under the total control of a corporation or media.

you are exactly right. He even explains away the "racism" charges and most of what ever happened on his channel that could even be remotely considered racist was actually submitted by his viewers.

I didn't see any of this, but I am a Wil Wheaton fan. Back since the days of TNG. He has always been pretty outspoken as well as a champion for nerds everywhere. I don't now much about Pew Die Pie, but just the name alone is a hard pass for me. If the fans were out of the picture, I'd put my money on Wil in a cage fight any day.

you've never heard of the most popular youtuber in the world? Pewdiepie is really funny. 9 years and never missed a day of posting at least a 10 min episode.

I only spend time on Youtube if I am watching music videos or trying to figure out how to fix something. I know there is plenty more to do on there, but I just never had the time to browse around. Millions of people can't be wrong I guess... :)

Greetings friend, interesting as always, is famous and has its public, of course has been the subject of the attention of many people, but most of the comments have been totally positive. My respects never stop publishing. For your faithful readers.

Yea man if you give it you have to be able to take it too! People love to try and attack others online to give themselves a personal boost... it's worse when everyone jumps on a bandwagon of hate!
