Can you see? Reflections on the Australian Government's strangulation of expression

in #news5 years ago

Hello from the past. I am writing this post on Sunday, 9 June, 2019. I have scheduled it via Steempeak and my google calendar to go live on August 6, local time for me.

There's no rhyme or reason for the use of these two particular dates.

I wanted to write something reflecting upon the events on the past week. Through time travel, I will then see if my views have changed.

Fair warning: this will be a post discussing many political issues that have occured in Australia. Australia is located in the Southern Hemisphere. It is home to just over 20 million people, and it is a place that doesn't get a lot of rain. It is far, far away from everywhere, but it's an advanced nation.

It is also a nation where journalistic integrity continues to be threatened by acts of force. Last week, the Australian Broadcasting Company was raided by Australian Federal Police. This was due to the fact that some information about misconduct in the military had allegedly leaked to the press. A story about this was published years ago.

The information in these documents was pretty damning and unfortunate for the Australian Government, and I'm sure the alleged individuals mentioned in the documents wouldn't want that information in the public domain.

But, it was. One journalist was even live-tweeting the fact that federal police officers were rifling through journalist's computers, and sources, while in the very same room as that activity.

Some months ago, Australia weakened the ability for its citizens to use encryption in messaging programs, email, basically anything. The government doesn't have to play by the same rules - it can keep encrypting everything that it wants.

Years ago, the government also formed strong "sedition" laws where only "genuine" satire could be written about them, arguing that it would be impossible to determine what satire is genuine and what isn't for the average Australian.

That isn't too far from the truth.

Walk through a city street in any major Australian town. You'll see the normal sub-sections of a multi-cultural society. You'll see mothers, fathers, children. You'll see people going about their business.

But, what you won't see is the freedoms and liberties that are constantly swept out from underneath each and every individual's feet. In the guise of "if you have nothing to hide, its okay if we look, right?" privacy and your ability to do what you want, when you want, and how you want is increasingly under threat.

Remember what I said about Australia being in the Southern Hemisphere? If this stuff keeps going the way it is, I'm sure this information will be the subject of a federal police raid one day too, and not just due to the fact that shifting tectonic plates will change the location of the Australian continent.

Unabridged access to the truth, and unabridged access to all sides of a story will be the only way that anyone can ever make a decision on what to believe.

You need all sides of a story for it to be complete.

History is indeed written by the victors. That's because there's no losers left, or they have had their voice systemically eradicated with prejudice.

Sort:

Australia is a Nanny Police State where regular people don't value the freedoms passed down to them (because they never had to fight for them) and thus they are continually eroded. But the UK, from whence these freedoms came is not much better these days.
America, which did fight for its own freedoms is not much better as the Founding Father's vision of limited government has been taken over by unaccountable bureaucrats while the politicians fiddle.
Ironically Israel has the most personal freedoms of any first world state.
The government is too busy protecting the people from real external threats to have as much time to interfere in their lives.
Also Jews are not big on authority & rules.
That is partly why I moved from Australia to Israel.

American society is a joke at the moment. If you read between all the lines and observe the real human condition across the board, it looks like the most unappealing place in the world to live.

Why does a government need to protect? Threats are ultimately a matter of perspective. A government only serves one purpose- to keep itself in power so that whatever agenda it wants can continue.

I never thought I'd think in such an anarchistic matter, but my level of disillusionment at all these facades continues to grow. Not bound in paranoia, or conspiracy, just bound up in a little bundle of pragmatism through careful observation.

While I understand your disillusionment, there is one essential and valid purpose of government and the nation states they govern - to protect their citizens from external and internal threats and provide rule of law.
The nation state exists because it is the smallest group of people that can effectively protect themselves from external threats in an age of modern weapons. In earlier times the tribe could serve that purpose.
The problem is that government have massively expanded their role in a the worst example of mission creep ever.
I'm sorry but the idea that threats are just a matter of perspective is ludicrous.
Tell that to the victims of the Holocaust, the Yazidis, the Georgians, the Nigerian schoolgirls kidnapped by ISIS, any victim of a terror attack, armed conflict or any Israeli targeted by terrorist missiles.

Without the Israeli Defence Forces, including missile defence systems like Iron Dome, it would be impossible me or any other Jews to live in Tel Aviv.
Hamas & Hizbollah have fired hundreds of thousands of rockets and missiles at Israeli cities over the last 15 years. Each one is deadly, capable of killing dozens or hundreds of people.
If not for the Israeli government protecting us there would be another Holocaust.

Too many libertarians are ignorant of the true reality of the world: a group of people without protection will soon be dead.
By pretending that we can get rid of governments entirely and ignoring the reason humans grouped together and created leadership in the first place, they weaken the libertarian case.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. All your points are valid. My lived experience differs from yours and mine are very clearly a first world problems.

As a person I have not first hand seen the impact of the atrocities you describe. Many shaped the world I live in today.

The sadness is that order (on a cosmic scale) is chaotic. I'm a believer in the cold and indifferent universe. Cause and effect.

Against the laws if nature, we can resist, but it is futility.

When man is a self directed "force of nature", that's when I get uncomfortable.

I'm a bit nihilist.

It's a sad world... :0(

If you're not terrified, you're not paying attention.

And if you are terrified, then you're a victim of terrorism.

"Domestic terrorism". Fuck, when did this view become "radical"?

It's quite unsettling.
