In a reddit AMA BIll Gates said:

If he was so hasty to make the link between crypto and deaths from drugs or the mafia why not go a step further and make the analogy between direct deaths and use of microsoft windows. I am fairly sure the rate is close to 100% by using his software.
So here is my counter argument based on his borderline retarded logic:

The Government’s ability to control what people experience through their computer software — that can be used through software such as VPN for money laundering and tax evasion and terrorist funding — is a good thing. Right now Microsoft Windows is used for buying fentanyl and other drugs so it is a rare technology that has caused deaths in a fairly direct way. Forbes Post from a couple weeks ago where his own company talks about using blockchain technology built on a cryptocurrency platform.
I realize it is for a DID system which is the opposite of anonymity (which is part of what he is calling out here) but his answer seems disconnected from what this tech is and comes off as ignorant.
Buffet had similar thoughts but then admitted that he didn't know enough about the space to form a full/real opinion. I expect more from Gates but no matter how much good he and his foundation might do, he is still one person with a lot of power and he can/is wielding it to his gain I am sure.
HAHAHAHA! Bill Gates' image as a technological nerd is one big fallacy. He is mainly a ruthless businessman that early on understood the technology - which doesn't mean he has any deep knowledge of it. Right now he obviously sees Crypto as a problem for his wealth and status that was built on lock-in, monopoly and surveillance . Crypto is the exact opposite.
I agree. So many systems came even earlier and were much better.
Microsoft has written backdoors into all of their products for the governments of the world (i.e. US, Iran, UK, etc.) to spy on what their citizens do, in say, MS Word, MS Powerpoint, and more importantly, Windows Operating Systems. The backdoors allow spying, which logically, lead to the deaths of those deemed "unfriendly" to the government.
I am sure that is why the company is so highly valued, amongst the most highly valued in the world. And of course founder of it all is going to talk his book, what else would be expected? That is where his bread is buttered.
