Nations will march towards the apex of their greatness at the same pace as their education. Nations will soar if their education soars; they will regress if it regresses. Nations will fall and sink in darkness if education is corrupted or completely abandoned. - Simon Bolivar

Today as i was reading through the news, something i do not recommend doing if you live in Venezuela and want to retain whatever is left of your sanity, i came across these news.

The schools in Vargas (the state I live in) have reported a desertion rate of over 80%! No you don't need to go get your glasses

80%

and the other schools nation wide are not really doing any better, all states share a similar number regarding school desertion.

Causes

The main cause of the desertion rates seem to be the lack of food in the schools, the state is not able to provide food for the kids and the parents can't afford to give money to the kids to buy food because they don't even have food in the house and the wages are abysmal.

Teacher's desertion is also high, with almost every profesional teacher looking into more profitable jobs or flat out abandoning their career or leaving the country for better opportunities.

Public Transportation is gone, there are almost no buses working anymore because the owners can't afford to buy wheels or spare parts if the car/bus breaks down, that means its harder for everyone to go to school, some take the risk of walking many kilometers but some are not lucky enough to live at a walking distance from their school/place of work and if you don't live in the capital Caracas, you are out of luck, because at least the capital has the subway system that by some sort of random miracle still works.

In my opinion this just worsens the situation further, uneducated kids won't be able to rebuild the country after the situation gets better and this just furthers the brain-drain of people that are already skilled or are still able to get an education.

It is pretty sad to see a nation that honors Simon Bolivar, that focused so much on getting the people educated to fall this low and let the education system rot apart like this.... I put two of his most famous thoughts on education to reflect what should be and what actually is.

An ignorant people is the blind instrument of its own destruction. - Simon Bolivar
