Cognitive dissonance plays a large role. Many live their lives without guilt, in a farce. To challenge the basis of the lie would lead to material and psychological and social ramifications they aren't willing to confront. The media isn't so much the culprit as it is a major component which works in service of this farce. Left or right, conservative Republican or liberal Democrats whatever we may call them or whichever box one places any person, most if not all of them live in a farce ad the fairyland is created thy are nursed into it by the media.
