The traffic police supported the idea of reducing the speed of movement in Russian cities

The proposal to reduce the speed from 60 km / h to 30 km / h on roads in Russian cities is supported by the State Traffic Inspectorate of Russia, Dmitry Mitroshin, head of the Scientific Center for Road Safety of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation, said on June 8.

At the same time, he noted that this issue should be approached individually, based on the situation on each separate street. For this, according to Mitroshin, it is necessary to conduct a large-scale inspection of the street and road networks. He also noted that one should not go to extremes within the framework of the presented idea.

“From the point of view of general approaches, the lower the speed, the lower the mortality rate. It is possible to ban traffic altogether and there will be no fatalities if this logic is followed, but, of course, it is not necessary to bring it to the point of absurdity, - said the representative of the department, whose words are quoted by TASS.

In addition, Mitroshin recalled taking into account the non-penalized speed threshold.

“Therefore, if you objectively substantiate the speed reduction to 30 km / h, then why not, but again, everything is equal across the non-penalty threshold, we say 30, and in my head - 50 km / h,” he stressed.

The head of the center added that the norms on traffic speed are regulated by the executive authorities, and the traffic police is only engaged in monitoring the implementation of the rules.

As reported by IA REGNUM, on May 19, the press service of the Moscow State Traffic Safety Inspectorate recalled the 6th UN Global Road Safety Week. Within the framework of it, the idea of reducing the speed on the roads to 30 km / h was presented.
