RE: Paradigm Shift: Instead of Jailing People, New York Drops Thousands of Arrest Warrants for Weed

in #news6 years ago

Excellent analysis of this news. I truly hope this paradigm shift ongoing spreads to other limits on our liberty, although I note, as you point out in the article, that the beneficiaries of oppression seem to be intent on keeping this from spreading and threatening their cash cows.

One other matter is the comment on murder investigations.

"This is not a simple oversight and is obviously due to the fact that police departments don’t have much of a financial incentive to solve murders."

While it's very true that but little financial incentive is directly linked to murder investigations, it's also far more difficult to achieve than merely rounding up dissenters (marijuana smokers), as murderers generally make every effort to conceal their crime.

Asset forfeiture laws might permit a savvy force to extract funding, at least from murders committed to gain control of resources, but the low rate of success in such cases, the large expenses they incur, and the cunning with which assets are concealed (largely due to the tax avoidance industry, offshoring, etc.) greatly reduces conviction rates over simple pot busts.

That makes them look bad, and as we all know, it's appearances that really count to LEAs.

Thanks!
