Nigeria "Heart of Africa" .. rich resources untapped # continued
Nigeria is rich in natural wealth and its strong agricultural sector, and produces a large number of minerals, such as tin, iron, lead and zinc.
It has the world's eighth-largest crude oil reserves and the ninth-largest natural gas reserves. According to the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), it has a proven crude oil reserves of 37 billion barrels and natural gas reserves of 5.2 trillion cubic meters.
Despite the large production of crude oil (1.83 million barrels in the first quarter of this year), the oil refining industry in Nigeria is very weak, importing most of its refined oil and has problems in energy production, where there is a frequent interruption of electricity.
Nigeria also has significant agricultural potential, thanks to the validity of a large part of its territory for agriculture, its geographical nature and the nature of its climate.
The country has an inadequate health system and Nigeria's average age is lower than many countries. According to the World Health Organization, the average age of men is 53 and 56 for women.
Every year, diseases kill hundreds of thousands of Nigerians, mainly malaria, typhoid, AIDS and tuberculosis.
