The strange town of Mesteti.

Mesteti was a country with a young history.
A new place, full of life and of navigators and travelers.
They arrived for a few days or months and then suddenly disappeared.
They departed quietly or secretly.

Mesteti was formed by many communities and some anarchists.

The administrators of Mesteti greeted the departure of some good navigator, with rollers of drums and blasts of trumpets.

At other times they were very refreshed to see some citizens leaving with their suitcases.
Because he had done some little trickery.

Mesteti, like all seaside resorts, had a port, and a good port also has a lighthouse of great importance.

Mesteti was also famous for competitions.

The administrators and young entrepreneurs of Mesteti, every day organized competitions open to the citizens, and also to navigators.

Competitions of all kinds: cooking, writing, poetry, art of music, in short, was a country in the competition, at any time of the day.

As in all countries, there was a municipality, and outside the municipal hall a beautiful bulletin board.
All contests were published on the bulletin board, dozens per day, honestly too many!

But we as citizens and navigators were very attracted by the possibility of winning.

In addition to complaining, we actively participated in the contests.
Always.

It was one day, about 11 months ago, that a young man knocked at my humble little navigator's shop.
He introduced himself: -Hi, I'm Totò,- nice to meet you, I told him, -I am Armando.-

Immediately, Totò made his proposal to me:
-I want to take part in another competition and I would like a loan of yours to be attached to my poetic rhymes.
If we win I will give you half of the won doubloons -.

I accepted the proposal, naively, but with much enthusiasm.

Meanwhile Totò, a great storyteller, had begun to talk about his adventures in the world of Mesteti.

He defeated dragons with a cooking ladle, he taught orcs with sharp teeth with the power of thought.

He could turn the big mugs of blonde beer into liquid gold, which was his passion.

Not to mention his raids in other communities, everyone appreciated him for his commitment and his great ambition.

-What picture do you want? - I asked him.
-I need a picture of the harbor lighthouse,- he said.

-Is this okay?-

-It's perfect, I attach it to my poetic writing and I'll let you know if we've won-.

He greeted me warmly, Totò was really nice.
I thought I had met a nice person, full of things to say, of altruism and kindness.

Many days passed, and as always I tried with brushes and colors, and I always painted my favorite subjects: lighthouses and the sea.

Suddenly I received an illumination, the contest in which I had participated with Totò, who knows how it was finished ?.

I didn't hear from Toto.
I then decided to send a traveling dove with my request for news.
With a nice bow, I tied my message to the foot of the bird.

Surprise!

The next day my dove returned with Totò's reply message.
I untied the bow and read:
-We won! - 13 doubloons and 53 shillings !!! Tomorrow I send the payment of the prize with the traveling dove.

I was very happy to have contributed with a painting of mine to the victory of Totò, in a small but very important community.

I happily waited for the dove with the prize.
Finally, on the afternoon of the following day the bird arrived with a small bag tied to its paw.
I untied it and ...

Double surprise !!!
There was only one doubloon and 80 shillings.

What a disappointment!
I thought that the young scion was wrong.
I asked him the usual message and the usual traveling dove.

A reply came to me the following day.
Here is the written text:

-Dear Armando, I'll explain, there have been many contingency problems, the change between doubloon and thaler is negative, there has been a strong death of cows and I have also seen the donkeys flying.

At that moment I understood with profound sadness that I had been duped by that nice and enterprising boy.

A guarantee was given a name.

On the advice of a member of the community in which I was determined to enter, I gave myself back to the Grand Master: Frà Gerolamo.

The good Gerolamo, a good person and rich of experience succeeded, with his qualities of mediator to make me have another doubloon.

Totò took his suitcase and went to other shores, there were trumpet blasts and dead bells, because Totò had left his mark.

Lo strano paese di Mesteti.

Mesteti era un paese dalla giovane storia.
Un luogo nuovo, pieno di vita e di navigatori e viaggiatori.
Arrivavano per pochi giorni o mesi e poi improvvisamente sparivano.
Partivano in sordina, o di nascosto.

Mesteti era formato da molte comunità e qualche anarchico.

Gli amministratori di Mesteti salutavano la partenza di qualche buon navigatore, con rulli di tamburi e squilli di trombe.

Altre volte erano molto rinfrancati nel vedere qualche cittadino partire con la valigia.
Perchè aveva combinato qualche piccolo imbroglio.

Mesteti, come tutte le località di mare, aveva un porto, ed un buon porto ha anche un faro di grande importanza.

Mesteti era anche famoso per le gare.

Gli amministratori e i giovani imprenditori, di Mesteti, ogni giorno organizzavano dei concorsi aperti ai cittadini, e anche ai navigatori.

Concorsi di tutti i tipi:di cucina, di scrittura, di poesia, di arte di musica, insomma, era un paese in gara, in ogni momento della giornata.

Come in tutti i paesi, c'era un Comune, e all'esterno dell'atrio comunale una bella bacheca.
Sulla bacheca venivano pubblicati tutti i contest, decine al giorno, sinceramente troppi!

Ma noi come cittadini e navigatori eravamo molto attirati dalla possibilità di vincere.

Oltre a lamentarci, partecipavamo attivamente ai contest.
Sempre.

Fu un giorno, circa 11 mesi orsono, che alla mia umile bottega di piccolo navigatore bussò un giovine uomo.
Si presentò: - ciao io sono Totò, --piacere!- gli dissi, -io sono Armando.-

Immediatamente, Totò mi fece la sua proposta:
-io voglio partecipare ad un altro concorso e vorrei un tuo quadro in prestito da allegare alle mie rime poetiche.
Se vinciamo ti darò la metà dei dobloni vinti-.

Accettai la proposta, ingenuamente, ma con molto entusiasmo.

Nel frattempo Totò, grande affabulatore, aveva iniziato a raccontare le sue avventure nel mondo di Mesteti.

Sconfiggeva draghi con un mestolo da cuoco, ammaestrava orchi dai denti aguzzi con la forza del pensiero.

Riusciva a tramutare in oro liquido i grandi boccali di birra bionda, che era la sua passione.

Per non parlare delle sue scorribande in altre comunità, lo stimavano tutti, per il suo impegno, e la sua grossa ambizione.

-Che quadro vuoi? - gli chiesi.
-Mi serve un quadro del faro del porto- mi disse.

-Questo va bene?- risposi.

-E' perfetto, lo allego al mio scritto poetico e ti farò sapere se abbiamo vinto-.

Mi salutò con molto calore, era proprio simpatico Totò.
Pensai di aver incontrato una bella persona, ricca di cose da dire, di altruismo e di gentilezza.

Passarono molti giorni, ed io mi cimentavo come sempre con pennelli e colori, e dipingevo sempre i miei soggetti preferiti: i fari e il mare.

All'improvviso mi giunse una illuminazione, il concorso al quale avevo partecipato con Totò, chissà come era finito?.

Non avevo notizie di Totò.
Decisi allora di inviare una colomba viaggiatrice con una mia richiesta di notizie.
Con un bel fiocco, legai alla zampina del volatile il mio messaggio.

Sorpresa!

Il giorno dopo ritornò la mia colombella con il messaggio di risposta di Totò.
Sciolsi il fiocco e lessi:
-Abbiamo vinto! - Ben 13 dobloni e 53 scellini!!! Domani invio il pagamento del premio con la colomba viaggiatrice-.

Fui molto contento di aver contribuito con un mio quadro alla vincita di Totò, in una comunità piccola ma molto importante.

Aspettai con gioia la colomba con il premio.
Finalmente, il pomeriggio del giorno seguente arrivò il pennuto con un piccolo sacchettino legato alla zampetta.
Lo sciolsi e...
Doppia sorpresa!!!
C'era un solo doblone e 80 scellini.

Che delusione!
Pensai che il giovine rampollo si fosse sbagliato.
Lo interpellai con il solito messaggio e la solita colomba viaggiatrice.

Mi giunse risposta il dì seguente.
Ecco il testo scritto:

-Caro Armando ti spiego, ci sono stati molti problemi di contingenza, il cambio tra doblone e tallero è negativo, c'è stata una forte moria delle vacche e ho visto anche volare gli asini-.

In quel momento ho capito con profonda tristezza che ero stato raggirato da quel simpatico ed intraprendente ragazzino.

Totò un nome una garanzia.

Sotto consiglio di un membro della comunità nella quale ero deciso ad entrare, mi recai dal Gran Maestro: frà Gerolamo.

Il buon Gerolamo, una brava persona e ricca di esperienza riuscì, con le sue doti di mediatore a farmi avere un altro doblone.

Totò prese la sua valigia e si recò in altri lidi, ci furono squilli di tromba e campane a morto, perchè Totò aveva lasciato il segno.

Non si ebbero più sue notizie, ma alcuni raccontano che è sul secondo anello di saturno a vendere birre ai marziani.
