Thoth's Tale. Handcut collage 70/50cm.

One of my favourite handcut collage artworks taken from the series A Kingdom in Pieces and created almost 14 years ago with my stained glass technique.

Thoth's image was inspired by the famous Baroque painting depicting Saint Jerom painted by Caravaggio. It was a fitting base to give image to the great scribe god and also gave me the opportunity start using my technique to create objects like the book and table. Back then my ideas were limited because my experience in collage was very limited. To repeat the same pattern, like a face, again and again was the only way i thought i could get comfortable with the tools. But through the process new ideas were born and i could easily and in an enjoyable way give them form.

A description for the series i wrote back then.
The theme of this series is inspired from religious paintings where the forms and symbols are replaced with those taken from ancient Egyptian theology. The reason of this act is not the revelation that the word of christian religion is based on ideas of older religions but the reminder that these ideas are deeply human and not divine at all.

Again i chose bright red as my main colour and a brownish purple colour as the skin, The brown for the table worked very well as the pale yellow which saw the best idea for the book pages. The head of the Ibis, the symbolic animal of Thoth, was rather easy to make and also it was the first artwork i used the human eye in an animalistic shape. It was the prologue to my later Teratogenesis Project.

The poster was created by a good friend of mine back then (2006) who was a graphic designer, for my exhibition in Serbia. This is Photoshop 13 years ago,lol!
