Goddess Isis and baby Horus. Handcut collage 70/50.

A handcut collage artwork taken from the series A Kingdom in Pieces and created almost 14 years ago with my stained glass technique.

My inspiration was a one of Leonard da Vinci's famous paintings of Mary and baby John. I did not make a lot of changes in this one as a really liked the faces and i wanted also to experiment a little with them to see if i am making progress with my technique. Faces are tricky, even small changes are resulting in very different expressions. I only added some ornaments like the horns, which is an important symbol of goddess Isis and an Egyptian ankh stuff at the hands of little John.

A description for the series i wrote back then.
The theme of this series is inspired from religious paintings where the forms and symbols are replaced with those taken from ancient Egyptian theology. The reason of this act is not the revelation that the word of christian religion is based on ideas of older religions but the reminder that these ideas are deeply human and not divine at all.

I cannot find the original painting and i do not quite remember after all these years, but i would like to say a bit about it. The original scene had also baby Jesus at one corner and even though it looks kind of unusual for us nowdays to see the Mother God holding in her lap little John the Baptist, it was a very popular scene back at the Renaissance age.It was a common belief that John and Jesus shared a bond and maybe were cousins also, for sure they were the same age. They are some who believe that they went to the desert together and others who think that maybe John was the mastermind behind the revolution that came in place back then. True or false the Great Masters do him a lot of honor back then and was a face that appeared quite often in their paintings.

Hi @georgeboya! I really love the artworks of Leonardo Da Vinci and I am glad to see that you had a hand in creating your own version of this work of art. The accessories that you added look good in this work. Each work from this series complements each other and conceals its mysterious history, it is incredibly interesting and very cool!

I am glad that you liked it @sadheaven:) Da Vinci is one of my favourite artists too, his works are full of strange symbolisms and hidden messages. I think he was really a genius as a person:)

I agree with you, he was a genius. How many hidden messages and incredible mysteries he put into his works, I also loved playing a computer game with a quest style where his works of art were the main riddles and keys to achieving goals. :)

I was surprised to read that it is a hand-made work, for its colors and features I thought first thing that was digitalization. God bless your life and talented hands.

Yes it is handcut:) Thank you very much for your kind words:)

Another powerful one @georgeboya it's funny too, religion, it's all taken from its predecessors, you have to go back pretty far to find any 'original' religion. Just as our history is always written by the victors. Our pasts seem a very malleable thing indeed.

Thank you Donna:) It is exactly like that with religion. I will tell you a story... I live in Thessaloniki, Greece and this town was founded after the death of Alexander the Great by one of his generals. Cassandros realised that the region needed a major city/port but the villagers around did not want to leave them and move to build a new city. So he convinced them by saying that they must go and bulild a city around the spot of a temple dedicated to the God of coppersmiths. And so they did and through the years a lot of coppersmiths had their workshops around the temple. When the Christians came they demolished the temple and build a church on it, but still to this day the coppersmiths are around this church. The name of the church is Mary of the Coppersmiths. Always sth remains from the past and the habits of the people are hard to change:)
