Geisha (芸 者?)

in #ntopaz5 years ago (edited)

A geisha (芸 者?), Pronounced [guéisha], is a traditional Japanese artist whose work consists of entertaining at parties, meetings or banquets exclusively female or male or mixed. Their learning can begin from the fifteen years, or from early ages.

In the Kinki region the terms geiko (芸 妓?) And, for geisha apprentice, maiko (舞 妓?) Have been used since the Meiji restoration. Geishas were quite common in the 18th and 19th centuries. Today they still exist, but their number has decreased.
