Open and Honest Question

Why is it so common for people to feel like "literally the worst person alive" (without any of the irony that "literally" might imply) on the most utterly paltry evidence?

Maybe we're in some Olympic competition in the collective unconscious, I don't know, but I know it's weird and unhealthy.
