Stockholm´s Subway system | A massive gallery (2/2)
Wait, another post with 60 pictures of metro stations? Are you still crazy? Who would want to see that again? It´s still a silly subject for a post.
Well, the blue line has more than the few stations I showed you in the first post, after all it´s the Blue Line (10) from Stockholm, the most famous one in Scandinavia because of the colors, paintings and themed stations it has along the whole line.
If you didn´t see my post from yesterday, let me explain pretty quickly: Someone told me that each station in the metro´s blue line is painted of a different color and I immediately thought *Oh, that sounds like a good post idea.
One day I decided to check some of the stations out and see what the fuzz was all about and I was pleasantly surprised. I didn´t expect each station to be themed, not just painted on a special color.
Stockholms´s public transportation system is one of the most effective and efficient ones I have seen in my life, if not the best at all. I haven´t experienced any delays at all, from buses, trains, tram or whatever, everything is always on time; every wagon, seat, bus or place for that matter is clean and well taken care of; reading directions, information booths and maps are easy to read and unless you haven´t used a transport system before, you will not get lost.
But man, it is expensive. The most expensive public transport I have ever see in my life by far! Getting anywhere is almost $5 euros. That´s way too much for me - or for anyone without a Scandinavian salary to be honest - and that´s why I only move by bycicle unless I have to go somewhere far away or with someone else.
Anyway, the full gallery is 120 worthy pictures (I took more than 300 pics, yes, that cool are the stations) so I divided it in two posts, otherwise you won´t look at all of them - I´m not even sure you´ll check out this one to be honest haha.
I hope the pictures are enough to allow you to immerse into the subway stations and to experience a bit of what I did. Without a doubt, these are the coolest metro stations I´ve seen in a long while :)

What a delight to see these! I was impressed years ago by all the different themes and beautiful artwork in the Moscow Subway. This is beyond incredible what they have done here, though. Your photos are wonderful, thanks for the subway tour.
Oh my god that's so much better than the ugly subway stations here in Budapest :)
The artsy pictures just keep coming .. thanks for sharing, looks really really cool! If I ever end up there, I will make sure to take a subway :)
I remember the Budapest metro stations. Last time I was living there was when they installed projection screens with lots of advertising, some news, and general clickbait-type material, so you could get a TV-like experience when waiting for a train. At least it was without sound, so you could block it if you wanted.
It was also at that time when they were about to open line 4, which nobody believed it would happen, as it had taken them way longer than expected. Eventually I left again before it was opened.
Funny comparison: In Mexico City's metro system line 12 was built around the same time. It is a 25 km long, 20-station line, and they managed to complete it between Sept. 2008 and April 2012. (Budapest's line 4 is only 7.4 kms, 10 stations, and it took them from 2004 to 2014.)
Lol, funny ha these differences in time with finishing something. We were living in Spain before coming to Budapest, and in our little town they were building the tram line to Granada (and it went to some other little places on the other side of Granada as well)..appareantly this was also a 10 year plan or something.. They had been building that for years already when we got there. During our last 5 months they started testing the trams. So we would see a tram back and forward like every 30 minutes WITHOUT any people in it.. day by day, week in week out.. months in a row!
That really sucked big time, as the bus was not doable in summer (so hot, and always packed, and sometimes these high busses where I would not be able to get in with the stroller when I was alone with the little girl).. I always hoped they would finally finish it, but we haven't seen it..
They have also been renovating one of the subways here now, I think it has taken 1 year or something? Maybe a bit longer, not sure.. But when they were fixing the tram rails 4-6 last year (during summer sigh) it didn't take too long before they opened again, the funny thing is, busses took over. Like ever 3 minutes a bus like with the tram.. In Holland when a train falls out, or a tram etc, you can wait forever to have different transportation, so public transport wize you are off way better here than in Holland :)
Oh no! The 4-6 tram line was the most horrible one ever! I only rode it on rare occasions when I really couldn't help it, otherwise I would enjoy walking on the Körút, seeing it literally crammed with people. The weirdest thing was, there are so many trams frequenting that line, that they might as well fill the remaining spaces with a few additional trams, creating one continuous conveyor-belt. And I bet people still would be hanging out the windows!
The most horrible one? Heck no! That's the only one that's updated and actually new trams :) But maybe that wasn't the case back then. I actually love that tramline it goes from one side to the other, and it mostly gets me where I need to go.. but when I need to go sideways through Budapest I hate those other very old and smelly trams.. they are actually disgusting (also chairs with furniture which doesn't help of course)
But this may not always have been like that of course.. maybe we're lucky they upgraded these before we came haha
Oh I actually loved the old trams. You know line 24, leaving Baross Tér towards Fiumei Út? That used to have notoriously classic cabs, and there was always room to sit down and enjoy the ride. It's when you are pressed into someone's armpit that makes me want to scream. I even prefer walking in the rainy snow rather than submit myself to that.
We usually take 4-6 or the one going to that black market (chinese illegal market halls) and these trams are smelly and super dirty. But I only went there because of the Lidl.. now we have one closer to us, so won't be going in that area much from now on..
And totally agree with you there.. my boyfriend has that every morning, being pressed against someones armpit.. and when the summer kicks in, it's horrible.. the smells.. sometimes it makes you want to throw up .. I try to avoid public transport during rush hours when I can, that helps haha
The metro stations in Mexico must be even worse than in Budapest, you can't imagine :P
Definitely! Just make sure to bring High top credit cards because almost nowhere takes cash, only card :O
They're not THAT bad, really. Some of them have some cool murals. Ah, you're seeding some inspiration here... I guess I should start a series of posts introducing the art in the CDMX metro!
Oh even worse? Well, I must say the public transport here is far better than anywhere I've ever been. Holland really SUCKS compared to Budapest, Spain as well.. the connections here are way better, and you can take a metro/tram/bus/trolly in every street.. I used to be scared of the deep electric stairs going into the subway stations, it made me nausea and sometimes almost faint :)
Stupid, but true.. Now I got over it, and even go there alone with the little one lol (didn't do that for a year at least )
Here you pay mostly with cash. Even if you get money from the government (for example we got child allowance until the little one turned 3) they come at your door with the cash, if you're not home, they leave a note and you can pick it up at the post office.. so strange, can't imagine that in Holland haha..
Here you really have to make sure to check if a restaurant accepts a card payment, and it's probably smart to always have cash with you when going for a bite.. would not be the first time we wanted to pay with card, but they look at us as if we're crazy because they only accept cash ..
I try to avoid really expensive places when we go somewhere abroad.. I rather look for the average or cheaper destinations :) Have you ever been to Macedonia? That was surprisingly nice last year, we went there without any expectations as the flights were so cheap. But MAN the food there SOOO cheap and SOOOO good.. Budapest can learn from that!
Are you sticking around for long there?
Well, for five Euros a ride I would have taken and posted as many pictures as I could, too. But how cool is the Stockholm metro!?! Lots of art, history, art history, natural history, and those weird markings on the floor I couldn't decide whether they were ornamental or utilitarian.
Super sweet pics! I used the stockholm subs a couple of times, but I really dont recall being so impressed by the inside artwork dude. Cool reminder!
Moskows subs also had super cool art in there I remember, but in ways of tidyness and time wise that is a whole different ballgame!
Yeah the same thing with Swiss subs here as the Swedish ones. Punctual, clean and awesome, but the price..ouch, the price!!
wow! que preciosas fotos * - *
