@aggroed has repeatedly made the correct point that token value is largely derived from the sinks that the tokens can be used for.
What is the sink of PAL (and SPT)?
If there isn't a sink, it seems like they are just fun status badges.
Am I just missing something?
PAL power is a sink, and it's a starting one.

But you're correct that in the first week they exist we don't have enough sinks... yet.
