Climate Change and Global Warming

in #partiko5 years ago (edited)

Over the years, we have been hearing about climate change, global warming, environmental sustainability, greenhouse gas, emissions etc. No matter how familiar these terms might sound, a great number of people still do not know what they mean. In this article, we are going to talk about climate change. In our subsequent articles, we will be explaining other climatic terms and expanding the horizon of our article for the benefit of those who have been yearning for ecological balance.

Climate change is the long-term atmospheric condition of a place over an extended period of time. It is an extended change in the weather patterns in a region.
A similar term that is interchangeable with climate change is global warming. Global warming is the rise in Earth’s temperature which persists for a decade or longer.
There could be several causes for climate change. The climate change that we face today is the effect of the rising concentration of carbon dioxide. The primary source of carbon dioxide is the burning of fossil fuels.
With sheer candour, the ecosystem needs a care; a responsible and cautious handling but man’s reckless and irresponsible treatments of the environment have cost him dear over the century. The sudden conflict is like a plague from another planet; an alien disease, strangely pandemic in nature. But it is very obvious that it was incubated and hatched on this planet by the odd machine called man. The mindless anthropogenic or bio-geographical activities are the fountain of the conflict. Plausibly, we live by certain principles which place certain restrictions on certain actions but our so much interest in industrialization and sophistication have brought untold plagues upon us rather than only the expected luxuries. The disequilibrium in ecological balance has culminated in endangering our peaceful co-existence with the matters of nature. And at the moment, the planet seems to haemorrhage and bleed from every inch of its pore because of our unconventional management and lackadaisical attitudes towards it.

Climate scientists have observed several long-term changes in weather patterns since the mid-late 19th century. Scientists measure the level of carbon dioxide in parts per million, i.e., the number of moles of carbon dioxide per million moles of air and global temperature in degree Fahrenheit or degree Celsius.
Climate change occurs when changes in Earth's climate system result in new weather patterns that last for at least a few decades, and maybe for millions of years. The climate system comprises five interacting parts. These include:

  1. Atmosphere (air)
  2. Hydrosphere (water)
  3. Cryosphere (ice and permafrost)
  4. Biosphere (living things)
  5. Lithosphere (earth's crust and upper mantle). It is quite pertinent to fathom that the climate system receives virtually all of its energy from the sun, with a comparatively tiny amount from earth's interior. The climate system also gives off energy to outer space. The balance of incoming and outgoing energy, and the passage of the energy through the climate system, determines Earth's energy budget. When the incoming energy is greater than the outgoing energy, earth's energy budget is positive and the climate system is warming. If more energy goes out, the energy budget is negative and earth experiences cooling.

I hope you do know that human activities can also change earth's climate, and are presently driving climate change through global warming.
It is good to know that in the scientific, media or policy documents, there is no general agreement as to the precise term to be used to refer to anthropogenic forced change; either "global warming" or "climate change" may be used. The first describes the average effect on a global scale, whilst the second describes how different geographical regions are affected differently.

I hope you understand something from this write-up?
