Ladies, Often Overtime? Beware of Diabetes

Overtime work may make you look valuable in the eyes of the boss, but actually this is bad for health. Recent research shows women who work more than 45 hours a week are at risk of type 2 diabetes is higher than women who only work 35-40 hours a week.

However, American Diabetes Associaton concludes genetics also play a role.

The study followed more than 7,000 adults working in Ontario, Canada.

Participants were researched for 12 years with age range 35-74 years. During the study period, one in 10 people had diabetes.

Researchers take into account factors such as age, sex, marital status, parent, ethnicity, residence, lifestyle, weight, smoking, and other chronic health conditions. They also include work shift factors, number of working hours per week of the year, and whether the work is active or inactive.

The study found no statistically significant relationship between man-hours and type 2 diabetes. But in women, working more than 45 hours a week increases 50 percent risk of developing diabetes.

The authors suggest long hours responding to stress that may trigger hormonal imbalance and insulin resistance. This then contributes to the development of diabetes.
