As long as he lived, Hasan Tiro stirred up the spirit of war in and out of the forest until he was pursued by the Government for his actions to free Aceh from Indonesia.

After declaring GAM on Mount Halimon, Pidie on December 4, 1976. Hasan Tiro was increasingly sought after in various parts of Aceh, specifically in the Pidie region.

He exiled, abroad until he finally settled in Stockholm Sweden.


After 30 years of fueling the ideology of GAM abroad, Hasan Tiro returned to Aceh on October 11, 2008 and died on June 3, 2010 at the age of 84.

In the history of his struggle, Hasan Tiro's figure was often associated with politics.

However, not many know that it turns out that during his lifetime Hasan Tiro also had an interesting humanist life and was rarely known to the public.

1. Romantic and literary man

During his lifetime Hasan Tiro was very close to the world of literature.His literary talents are reflected in the language he uses in writing.

One of the epic drama titled "The Drama of Achehness History" became an authentic proof that revealed Hasan Tiro as a reliable writer, as well as a director.

This manuscript was written during the guerrilla war in Aceh forest around July 1978.

During that time, GAM Education Minister Dr Husaini decided to raise the story of the people's struggle in the form of radio drama.

A dozen cassette recorders were taken to headquarters. GAM soldiers become players playing various characters in the drama.

While the background used classical music by world class composers, such as Antonio Vivaldi, Bach, Beethoven plus instruments recorded from international radio stations.

It took a week to record this radio drama and succeed successfully.

Then Hasan Tiro reproduced the tape and distributed it throughout Aceh.

2. A Nationalist and Love of Indonesia

The figure of Hasan Tiro did not always fuel the spirit of resistance against the Indonesian Government.

He was also a very nationalist figure. Some literature says, during his teenage years, Hasan Tiro had been a borer of the Merah Putih flag, at a place in Lamlo (formerly Lamulo), not far from his house.

After that he migrated to Bireuen and Yogyakarta. He was once a confidant of the Deputy Chief of the Army, Sjafruddin Prawiranegara, and was sent by the Indonesian Government to become staff of the Attachment of Information at the Permanent Administration Office of the Republic of Indonesia (PTRI) in New York, USA.

In the city where the United Nations is based, he also completed his doctoral program at Columbia University.

3. Not Interfering in Business Affairs with Politics

In his book, The Price of Freedom: The Unfinished Diary of Teungku Hasan di Tiro was mentioned even though he was under surveillance of the Indonesian Government, while in America, Hasan Tiro felt himself a great success in the business world.

He entered the big business network and managed to penetrate the circle of government in many countries, such as in the US, Europe, Middle East, Africa and South Asia, except Indonesia.

He avoids dealing with Indonesia. From the results of his tenacity, Hasan Tiro has close business relations with 50 prominent US businessmen.

Their companies are engaged in petrochemicals, shipping, construction, aviation, manufacturing and food processing industries.

Hasan Tiro has a cooperative relationship with several companies.

As a consultant, he led many US business delegations to negotiate large business transactions in the Middle East, Europe and Asia.

One visit was in 1973. Hasan Tiro visited Riyadh and was greeted by King Faisal.

There were two gifts presented by Hasan Tiro to the King of Saudi Arabia.

Hasan Tiro never mixed business affairs with politics.

His business associates did not know what was in the mind of the businessman in exile.

Especially about his ambition to realize Aceh's independence in Sumatra.

He never asked for their sympathy, advice and support.

Therefore, the name and company of the US entrepreneurs were not mentioned by Hasan Tiro in his unfinished diary.

4. Very fond of his son Karim di Tiro

Karim was very impressive to Hasan Tiro. Wherever he went, Karim was always taken.

Karim got a special place in The Price of Freedom: the Unfinished Diary of Teungku Hasan Di Tiro which he wrote during his time in the guerrilla field.

Even when Hasan Tiro was already in Aceh, one of the camps in the forest was named Karim.

Karim's child has shown certain temperaments at the age of four and five.

The story, when Karim was taken to a candy store, a bunch of children tried to steal candy.

The shopkeeper doesn't know it. Hasan Tiro, who was looking at various sweets, thought of doing something.

But he had not had time to think, there had been a whistle. The mob ran away helter-skelter. Turning towards the sound, he saw Karim with a whistle in his hand.

The old shopkeeper also thanked Karim.

On another occasion, the story of Hasan Tiro in the book The Price of Freedom: the Unfinished Diary of Teungku Hasan Di Tiro, he invited Karim to the mosque for Friday prayers.

Karim has always been the view of people and even hugged diplomats who pray in the UN building, New York.

He invited Karim to pray in that place, to make him understand the religious orders.

Once, Hasan Tiro was walking with Karim on Fifth Avenue, New York.

Many people approach the child to just talk or hold their cheeks.

When walking with Karim, Hasan Tiro felt like he was accompanying an important person. Because his son is always the concern of other pedestrians.

On another day, Karim was left by his father in the lobby of the Plaza Hotel.

Hasan Tiro left briefly to call someone.

Not finished calling, he saw senator Eugene McCarthy, who later became a US presidential candidate, talking to Karim.

The senator then approached Hasan Tiro to praise Karim.

"I have to approach and shake hands with your son, because he looks so handsome!" said the senator.

In memory of all this, Hasan Tiro was upset on his way back to Aceh to lead a guerrilla in an effort to proclaim an independent Acehnese country.

Exactly 30 October 1976, Hasan Tiro managed to infiltrate Aceh with a small motorboat.

He landed safely at Pasi Lhok, Kembang Tanjong, Pidie. Hasan Tiro left all luxuries in America and then led guerrillas in Aceh.

Including, little Karim and his wife Dora, he left in the United States.
