PHC Top 3 Monthly Contest - Extraterrestrial Movies

1 Stargate (1994)

Set using Old World Egypt allowed ones imagination to go back in time exploring history under the ancients who worshiped sun god Ra, touch back in time with current world.

A gate transporting you in a whirlpool of special effects (it was 1994), stepping through the gate into a temple on a desert planet, assisting ancient Egyptian like individuals overthrow and alien god, what a different approach in connecting old with new.

For me, living in an all male star cast home, this sent the guys into thinking of how this could possibly work, time travel through a gate. Yes black holes, time travel has never completely left the minds on how or why they exist, or could be out there.

I enjoyed the actors Kurt Russel and James Spader... so what was not to enjoy?

Before 1994, there were no Stargate TV shows, no books, and no franchise, leaving everything to your imagination, this blossomed into a great franchise in years to come.

Plot: In modern-day Egypt, professor Daniel Jackson (James Spader) teams up with retired Army Col. Jack O'Neil (Kurt Russell) to unlock the code of an interstellar gateway to an ancient Egypt-like world. They arrive on a planet ruled by the despotic Ra (Jaye Davidson), who holds the key to the Earth travelers' safe return. Now, in order to escape from their intergalactic purgatory, Jackson and O'Neil must convince the planet's people that Ra must be overthrown.

2. Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977)

I thoroughly enjoyed this film, so much so we watched it for a second perhaps third time when the boys were old enough to enjoy again in the 1990's, still one of my favorites in how would we treat aliens if they arrived.

First sighting, story line and the idea of communicating was well thought out, at the time models were built of the mountain (some art skills in mud structures). One cannot believe this is already 40 years old, and recently enhanced for next generation to show their children.

Plot: Science fiction adventure about a group of people who attempt to contact alien intelligence. Roy Neary (Richard Dreyfuss) witnesses an unidentified flying object, and even has a "sunburn" from its bright lights to prove it. Roy refuses to accept an explanation for what he saw and is prepared to give up his life to pursue the truth about UFOs.

3. E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial (1982)

Wrapped up like a good old gum ball, it was sweet! Something young children could relate to, an imaginary friend with a glowing finger (almost as friendly as a giant big frog). This extraterrestrial movie really touched everyone at some level, it was touching, had adventure along with a crazy ending, it worked! Magic for children endearing for parents who had to sit through it a couple of times.

A nice way of teaching children to work together, bonded in friendship, love and loyalty, even when a new friend from a vastly different background arrives. An enchanting movie for children with child actors, adult scientists arrived to assist were not menacing, keeping the tone of the film really for children.

Plot: After a gentle alien becomes stranded on Earth, the being is discovered and befriended by a young boy named Elliott (Henry Thomas). Bringing the extraterrestrial into his suburban California house, Elliott introduces E.T., as the alien is dubbed, to his brother and his little sister, Gertie (Drew Barrymore), and the children decide to keep its existence a secret. Soon, however, E.T. falls ill, resulting in government intervention and a dire situation for both Elliott and the alien.

I LOVED Stargate! I even loved the TV series... with MacGyver! Recently, I had watched all the TV series... I love how low tech it was, but the universe was such an interesting one... it got to be quite complex!

We used to enjoy weekend movies as a family, all these movies were hits in my home having boys, Oh boy their minds they went on a tangent for weeks when something caught the imagination.

TV series reboot Battlestar Galactica was one worth watching, Fringe another series I enjoyed. Some do go overboard today with effects leaving the show feeling over-cooked.

Battlestar Galactic a was awesome! I'm trying to convince my wife to see it... I'm currently watching Caprica which is the prequel to the events in Battlestar Galactica... Also another good one is Firefly if you haven't watched it!.

Now don't laugh here Lady Joan, anything that my kids raved about I avoided like the plague. They were ET this and ET that and I would joke that ET stands for Early Transfer to bed and they would all get mightily upset.
I am not a great movie man and maybe some day when I am old I will sit down in my wheelchair and watch all of these movies hahaha.
Blessings and good luck in the competition!

Weekends when homework and everything had been done was the time we rented movies and spent hours of fun discussing eventualities of what could happen if it came into being.

Reading books was another outlet as a family, however the guys mostly read Stephen King type books while I was still busy keeping the home running....

Ah! I always worked in the country Lady Joan and was hardly ever at home on weekends. Of course the wife and the kids did their own thing and I was only involved when there were some serious issues.
Mostly caused by my son and I think the fact that he was born on Friday the 13th had something to do with it hahaha.
Blessings!

Made it with time to spare! So awesome to see you officially in the running again this month. These are definitely solid choices. I think it's going to be another nail-biter of a dpoll to see which ones come out on top because there really are so many great ones in this genre. E.T. will forever be on my list. I think it most likely was the first alien movie I ever watched, but it also is so iconic for that time in history. I love thinking about what those conversations with the boys must have been like in your household about Stargate, as well! Such fun I'm sure. Of course Close Encounters is without a doubt a classic. I think it definitely stands the test of time! Thank you for sharing your wonderful post with us!

Debates after watching movies as a family still happens, makes one think about possibilities or argue how crazy it all sounds @plantstoplanks thanks for arranging another lovely topic.

Seen some lovely selections visiting other members posts, along with some great fresh ideas to look for and enjoy @pchtop3

Two of my favorites, ET and Close Encounters @joanstewart. I can't even imagine how many times we have seen those movies. So fun :) Good choices!

With a young family we belonged to a movie club where you booked your movies and rented for the weekend. Good movies definitely watched more than once, good all round entertainment @birdsinparadise.

Yay for stargate!! Best movie ever! Have you seen the latest one? It's pretty good actually.

Nice list for the contest!

Stargate movie was exceptional in story line, yes have seen some of the later ones but none matched up to the originals in my mind.

Oh definitely not. Although the last movie was close as it happened before when they first found stargate. The girl in there ends up being that old lady we see in the first. I thought it worked out well.

What a greta selection three movies I loved

In movies category these were all enjoyed a couple of times, newer shows have been more toward TV series, with SciFi still high selection on the viewing list.

For me as well I have seen all of those at least twice
I can’t think of any recent sci-fi movies anywhere near as good

Hey alright!

What a fun contest. ET must be on everyone’s list for sure. I forgot about close encounters and will have to go back and watch it again.

Great entry.

So much to do, so little time @zekepickleman, yup this is a fun contest so be sure to enter before tomorrow.

@joanstewart,

Would you believe I've never seen Stargate? I've meant to watch it a million times but somehow never got around to it. Netflix on the weekend.

Great selections.

Quill

Enjoy, it really is a good mix @quillfire

I have really been doubting whether or not I should add E.T. to the list. Glad to see you did. Best ET-movie ever :0)

I don't think I've ever watched Close Encounters of The Third Kind.... I've heard plenty about it, but I think I never took the time to watch it... Shame on me...

E.T. was endearing, definitely had to mention having a young family at the time it really was most enjoyable.

Close Encounters worth watching, with winter approaching might be a nice movie to enjoy on a cold day with a bag of popcorn.
