Philippines' Independence Day: What it really means for me

in #philippines6 years ago

Independence day for the Philippines is a big deal. If you may know The Philippines had been colonized not only by the Americans but also the Japanese and Spaniards for a long time. So having this "independence" after more than 300 years of colonization is greatly celebrated.

When I was in elementary school we used to create our own little Philippine flags and decorate it in our homeroom after a parade of the students in the street. There are plays and TV programs that will commemorate this event. But for some reason this is no longer being done today. There are still ongoing traditions such as flag raising in Luneta Park and in Kawit, Cavite but kids these days no longer see it's importance and impact.

Maybe it's because of the technology that distracts us from actual and important things in life? Or is this day only viewed by the working youth as a "day off" work. And some BPO companies does not even allow their employees a time off, business continues but in compensation they will be paid doubled.

As I browse through the social media sites only a few people are posting about it. I know not all things should be posted online but it seems that selfies and OOTD's are more of a thing now than the actual historical significance. I believe this day or even week should be in commemoration for that day. I hope to have the younger generations of today to be aware and informed about our heritage and historical background.

I hope schools would not only focus on english literacy and technological advances but each young Filipinos should know the importance the story of the current freedom they are experiencing and compare the lives of earlier Filipino youth before. What kinds of restrictions and life they had.

I envy some counties that indulge their young ones in deep teachings about their culture, their language and their history. I see other counties that still wear their national costumes at parties and ceremonies, they know and respect their heroes and influential people throughout their history. They give proper respect to athletes that represents their country. The government supports their representatives and give proper credit to their soldiers.

In a sense, sadly, our country is not free from all the negative aspects that blinded us before. Has freedom gave people the authority to bash other people, to humiliate and judge them verbally and attach them online saying it's freedom of speech. We still have that crab mentality that we tend to pull people who strives to reach the top so we can still be in the same level. We joke about national figures and people who had made a difference and they do that bluntly without any restraint. We rant and focus on fake news that appreciate greatness and positive news.

We are known as happy poeple, always smiling and hospitable. But did the harsh world made us immune to any compassion at all. Being humane and kind is one of our traits but people takes advantage of these traits that eventually transforms our values to having trust issues and doubt for all things.

I hope to have these mindset reset from the time we were still brave and strives to do what is right. The BAYANNIGHAN we are all so proud of instead of tearing each other apart. For me, this day should be for us to reflect on these issues. I pray that all we not just my countrymen but for the whole world to work together and achieve that equilibrium and peace.
