#Ulog Ep. 5 - Cultivating Culture

in #philippines6 years ago

My share for @surpassinggoogle's #ulog celebrating you and life.

Sharing our culture is also one of the subjects that I love covering. Everytime we go out I always expect to learn something new about almost anything under the sun. New things to learn each day about our culture and influences from other countries makes our country full of color. Today I'd like to share about farming tool that were used, and is still used in some parts of our country.

Cultivating Culture

Back in the days during the early Chinese trading era farming tools were brought to our country. Among these are the iron part of the plow. The part of the plow which is pointed is referred to as Litau and adapted from the word Lui Tau which means plow head. It's purpose is to break down the soil to prepare for planting. The other iron part is called Lipia adapted from the Chinese word Lui Pia. Once the soil is broken down the Lipia creates channels in the soil by turning the soil over. The other parts of the plow is composed of the handle and for the animals then yoke which is referred to as singkaw.

Here in our country water buffaloes or carabaos are used to pull the plow to cultivating the farm land. It has been said that the training of the water buffaloes was passed on to us by the Chinese settlers. A gift that has helped our people to develop our farming methods.

After the rice harvest a wooden mortar and pestle is used to remove the husk from the rice. This tool can also be found in other countries. A primitive tool which is very effective in processing food and grinding grain. Until today there are still some who use the old ways of living. Not adapting to modern conveniences and keeping the culture alive is something very rare now these days.

Old farming clothes used to protect oneself from the scorching sun while operating the plow pulled by the water buffalo. This is something we do not see anymore as plows are motor operated now which makes farming easier but still it is hard work. In return productivity is increased on the farmlands.

Here are other plows which were used in the early days. Now just a display to remind us how hard our ancestors worked to provide food on the table. We on the other hand have our own yokes to carry and life to be tilled. If you would not work you would not eat basically the same system until now.

Out of the hard labor comes out the fruits of your hard work. We must continue on and plant the seeds for sure a bountiful harvest will come along. Never give up in cultivating life as sometimes blessings arrive unexpectedly.

History is one of my favorite subjects. I love to read and learn how different cultures have evolved. It is so amazing to see things that were used years ago inspire better methods or modern items to do the same thing more efficiently and more productively.

This post records such and it was an enjoyable read.

Thank you very much. I often create content about culture and history in our country. Most of them are in old churches with rich history. I go crazy when I visit old churches it is an eye candy for me and see each pillar, each artifact, each pew and painting. I can't help talking much about it.

magandang post po ito para eh balik yung history kung san at kung pano talaga tyo nagsimula bilang simpleng mamamayan nang wla pa masyadong teknolohiya.. tsaka ganda ng mga kuha mung litrato sir..

Maraming salamat kaibigan. Our culture is amazing wala akong interest dati pero because of steemit and photography nagkaroon ng hilig. Also I learn a lot.
