North Home of Private Housing Design

in #photo5 years ago (edited)

The concept of this private house is based on a detailed analysis of the surrounding environment. This technique requires architectural design to be an unstable intermediate element between landscape and art. The area of Cornwall, Ontario, changed dramatically in the middle of a century with the construction of St Lawrence Seaway. Since then, rivers have been opened up for commercial navigation and new hydropower stations have been built.

The implementation of the hydropower station forced the residents of six nearby villages and three small villages to relocate, completely remodeling the riverbank of the St. Lawrence River, and the project is located in a small cluster of islands created by the floods. More precisely, the location of the project is actually a remnant of a large development plan, which itself creates a wide coastline and once again strengthens the concept of horizon in the landscape. The artificial coastline raised by the floods is flat, making the coastal wind extremely strong.

Compared with those natural landscapes that have been transformed by human beings, the building itself also contains a certain time attribute: the permanent components of the building interweave with those temporarily built components. The outer edge of the house is surrounded by a permanent boundary of cement (which indicates the ownership of the building to the land), but the building itself has a flexible and short-lived steel structure. It's as if architecture implies future changes within this permanent boundary. This opposition is rooted in the internal attributes of any structural structure, and there is always a contradiction between those eternal and constant. The building placed itself in this unstable contradiction, predicting the upcoming changes in the structure of the building in an uncertain and prophetic manner.
